Why do we date? • Recreation- to fill time between puberty and marriage • A way to gain social status based on whom and how often one dates • To meet ego needs • Leads to mate selection • Helps prepare you for marriage • You recognize how words and actions can affect others • Learn about members of the opposite sex
Choosing a dating partner…… • Factors that attract you to your friends will also attract you to your dating partners • Physical attraction • Social group • Personality traits • Extracurricular activities
What should dating accomplish? • Increased knowledge of and experience in forming relationships with members of the opposite sex • Increased self-knowledge- interests, values, communication patterns etc. • Increased knowledge of intimate relationships • Experience and knowledge that will enhance decision-making skills in mate selection
Types of Dating: • Group dating- -each member of group has fun without feeling especially close to any one person -get to know all members of group -easy way to begin dating -can interact with opposite sex without any pressure
Types of Dating Continued • Random dating- -allows people to date more than one person at a time -chance to socialize with many different people -everyone grows socially -learning about getting along with others
Types of Dating Continued • Steady dating- agree to date only one person -provides several types of security -knowing someone likes and cares for you -knowing that someone understands and enjoys being with you -can be yourself, without fear of rejection
Types of dating (continued)…… -do not have to worry about spending the evening with someone you don’t know -security of having a date when you “need” one (not a good reason to date!) -may lead him or her own -commitment involved steady dating encourages the couple resolve their conflicts
