  4. What type of members are we looking for? What characteristics would we like members to possess? • Organizations should look to their mission/values to answer these questions. • Diversify your membership…look for skills and talents that are needed for your organization’s success and continuity. To be successful in recruitment we need to know what we are looking for. RecruitmentWhat are we looking for?

  5. At the beginning of the Fall and Spring Semester • ALL YEAR LONG! • The organization and members need to be always thinking about recruitment. RecruitmentWhen do we recruit?

Host events that are: • Social (bowling nights, chili cook-off, etc.) • Aligned with the mission of your organization • Market and promote your organization • Use Orgsync • Go out and meet people…do not expect them to come to you • Facebook, Twitter etc…USE RESPONSIBLY!   8. Retention What is “retention” related to student organizations? What are the challenges in retaining members? What does your organization currently do to retain members?

  9. New members need to feel welcome • New and old members have different needs • Determining those needs • Officer responsibilities • Member responsibilities Seek to accommodate each group’s needs. RetentionNew & Old Members

What involvement opportunities are there for members? • Can new members get involved immediately? • Is all planning done by executive board or are there committees? • Members should be encouraged to voice their opinions. • Embrace the power of delegation • Find the balance between challenge and support.   11. Approach activities as if they are required • Be the most positive person in the room and it will rub off! • Care • Approach fun activities with enthusiasm • Get them involved! Motivating Yourself & Others

  12. Are the meetings and functions enjoyable? Or are you only going through the motions? • Build fun activities into your meetings • Make sure you are also doing fun events along with regular organization activities RetentionHave Fun!

  13. Delegate a responsibility to them • Say “good job” and explain why • Jot a note • Give credit where it’s due Recognizing Others

  14. Don’t overpromise • Have a cheat sheet • Refer when you’re unsure • Keep in touch Good Follow-through

  15. Set and review organizational goals • Fall and spring semester • Celebrate previous achievements • Adjust goals based on member feedback and organizational needs A periodic review will lead to a reenergized and refreshed organization. RetentionReflect and Celebrate

  16. It’s not always easy • Explain it, don’t excuse it • Ways to say “No”: • Use your own voice and your own style to say “no” in a respectful, honest way. Here are some suggestions… • “Unfortunately, I‘m already really booked with other commitment this month and I want to be sure I do them justice.” • In an effort to stay balanced and to honor my current commitments, I’ll have to say no. Thank you very much for thinking of me and best of luck.” Knowing When—and How—to Say “No”
