  3. ‘Towns like us’; an innovative project Combining educational development through widening participation with objectives for urban and social regeneration Developed and strengthened since opening in 2005

  4. Why Barnsley? • Barnsley ranked in bottom 10% of the government multiple deprivation index (2007) as one of the most deprived districts in England • Borough; 9 towns and 23 villages • Population 220,000 • Influenced by: - employment deprivation - health deprivation - education

  5. Employment deprivation Large numbers of people either unemployed or long term sick The working age population with limiting disability and illness is 8.6% higher than the national average Unemployment is 8% of the working age population compared to 6% national average

Health Deprivation Long term illness is an acute problem (DH 2008) Although improving, health is generally worse than the national average Early deaths from coronary heart disease, stroke and cancer are decreasing but still higher than the national average Obesity is higher than average; 28.5% of adults and 20% year 6 children Males from the most deprived areas have more than 5 years shorter life expectancy There are 470 deaths per year from smoking; although reducing, smoking is significantly higher than nationally 1/3 households live in ‘fuel poverty’ Upward trend in drug possession and trafficking but downward trend in other crime

Education • Many have low level or no qualifications • Few young people stay in education • Working age population with no qualification is 4.8% above national average • 23.9% of the population have a reading age of 11 years • High proportion of children are in poverty • Higher than national average of teenage pregnancy

  10. Aims of Campus • In the spirit of partnership. On the Barnsley campus we are working to; • Raise aspirations and widen participation • Develop curricula that reflect local need • Enhance the contribution that Higher Education makes to the local economy • Take higher education to the community • Contribute to the enhancement of health and social well being in the community

  11. Leadership Centre for Public life Situated on Campus it is in its infancy Launched November 2008 Example of partnership working between education, health, social care and business

  13. Vision The Centre seeks to ensure that present and future leaders in public life have the skills, capacity and ambition to develop excellence in children, young people and family services in Barnsley

  14. Aims The Centre aims to; Provide, promote and inspire world class leadership Support and further enhance the quality, skills and confidence of those leading within public life now and in the future Research, develop and share best practice in integrating working practices in public services
