Mathematics in Year 10 • Most of the remaining course is delivered in year 10 (80% of what is left) • 100% exam – no coursework or controlled assessment • Please do not forget about the importance of Maths • Students are tempted to put Maths on the ‘backburner’ until year 11
Mathematics in Year 11 • Only 20% of the course left! • All the time left after Christmas next year is for Revision • Year 11 is only successful after a good Year 10 – it is often too late to repair any major issues • Students who do not complete homework to a good standard generally do not go on to do effective revision at home in Year 11
Mathematics in Year 10 & 11 • Scientific calculators are essential for GCSE mathematics • They need to be familiar with their own calculator – all models are different • To study Mathematics at A Level, students require a good B grade
Higher or Foundation Level? • We now aim to enter more students than ever for the Higher Level paper • This is suitable for any student who shows they are sure to achieve at least a grade D • Mock exams will be used to determine the entry level – if in doubt we will go for the Higher paper.
Analysis of Tests and Exams Results for every student and every topic analysed in detail to inform revision

Year 10: GCSEs This is the Year that these start in earnest in English, Maths and the 4 Option block subjects. By the end of Year 10 your child will have covered 75% of all the GCSE content that will be examined in Year 11 in their GCSE Subjects Assessments: There will be a mixture of : • Modular tests (Science only) • End of year exams (Late June) (English, Maths and Option Selection) • Controlled Assignments.
Controlled Assignments • These have replaced coursework in all subjects except ICT where coursework used to be done. • The key difference is that the CA will be completed in lesson time. The students are given planning time in lessons, and then they have to produce a piece of work in a given time, (somewhere between 4 and 8 hours), as specified by the exam board. The work is done in exam conditions. • Work can only be done in that period of time it can not be worked on at home. If a student is absent for any of the designated lessons catch up lessons are held after school. Most of the CA’s will be completed on computer. • CA’s can not be redone. Once the deadline has passed that is it, unless a student has been off school.

Whole School Literacy Changes to Teaching and Marking from September 2012 and how they will affect year 10
Reading • Barking Abbey is currently pushing for a new drive in literacy standards in all subject. • To help this drive, all pupils are now expected to have a reading book on them at all times when in school. • Any teacher (from any subject) may ask their students to get out their reading books in the lesson so year 10 pupils should ensure that they are prepared for this. • All year 10 students have a library card and were given an induction to the library in year 9 so there should be no excuses!
Half-Termly Assessment: Changes to Marking From September 2012, every student is to be assessed for their literacy and spelling, punctuation and grammar (SPG) in at least one piece of writing per term. This will happen in EVERY subject. All students will be given a mark out of 10 for their SPG based on an agreed criteria (see pyramid on next slide)
By Year 10, most students should be aiming to achieve over half marks in all of their subjects for their SPG The SPG on this pyramid consist of very basic literacy skills that most students should have mastered by year 10.
Termly reports • Marks awarded for SPG will now be added to pupil reports. • This will help teachers to ensure that good literacy standards are being maintained in all subjects – not just English. • An award of up to 10% will be allocated for Spelling Punctuation and Grammar in the GCSE English (Lang. And Lit); RE, Geography and History papers for Summer 2014.
How we will help struggling students • Any student who is highlighted as struggling with literacy based on their SPG marks will be given opportunities to attend literacy workshops after school to help them improve their knowledge.
Dictionary and Thesaurus • To help pupils with their SPG, it might be useful if students carried around a pocket dictionary and thesaurus. • These can be bought relatively cheaply from W H Smith, Amazon or other good book shops.
Reference There is a literacy help pack available on Moodle for both students and parents who may wish to brush up on their skills. It can be found (on Moodle) under: English Whole school literacy Literacy booklet This is currently a work in progress and will be added to and changed over the year to meet the needs of pupils. If you have any questions about this new marking policy, please contact Ms Watkins (English Department) watkinsk@babbey.bardaglea.org.uk
Science • There will be three different Science courses running for this year group. • Sets 1 will be aiming to do Triple Science. • Set2 & 3 will be aiming at Double Science. • Set 4 will be completing the BTEC course.
Triple Science • .
BTEC/Things to Note • BTEC - All students started this last year, so this will be a continuation of that course. It is all coursework. • Year 9 : 6 Modules….1 GCSE (A*-C) • Year 10 ; 6 Modules …another GCSE (A*-C) • Year 11…Opportunities to improve Awards on Module Units from Pass (C) to Merit (B) , etc • Please note that everyone apart from the BTEC students will need all three revision guides. • Also note there are far fewer opportunities to resit modules and all resits will have to be paid for. So it is therefore important that students prepare thoroughly for all exams. • Revision sessions will run 3-4 weeks prior to each resit/ unit exam.
