    9. 6 open space projects have been funded with $224,092 of grant funds. The estimated value of the land at the time of the grant applications was $540,195. With Durham County property values constantly escalating, I’ll leave it to the experts to put a current market value on these properties. 13. A relatively new category of projects is the public garden. Whether a communal space to grow vegetables, herbs, and flowers, or an innovative approach to early-childhood play, gardens are fast becoming a popular recreational amenity in urban settings. Matching Grants has funded 6 projects, 3 of which are recent recipients and are ongoing. The total of grants in this category is $84,926, but the value, due primarily to the land values within the City limits is $229,628. A relatively new category of projects is the public garden. 18. The Matching Grants Committee recommendations are to make the program more visible by bringing presentation to civic groups and organizations of all types. Keep the guidelines easy to understand with well defined criteria. Follow-up with regular monitoring during the life of the project to ensure public access, appropriate maintenance and signage. Allow the program to adapt to changing trends in recreation and demographics. The Matching Grants Committee recommendations are to make the program more visible by bringing presentation to civic groups and organizations of all types.
