  2. “Goal setting has yet to become personal, real and compelling for us in our daily lives in schools. As a result, we are missing one of the most powerful tools for helping students achieve....” (Conzemius and O’Neill, 2006) “Goals within the school must be based on specific student needs and written in terms of measurable student outcomes. The more specific the goals are within the school, the closer the teachers can get to the level of classroom application that will lead to improvements in student learning.” (TAP Leadership Team Handbook, p. 21)

  4. Why Set Goals for Your Students? • Setting goals for (and with) and with your students can have a big impact on their success. Academic research suggests that there are several key benefits to effective goal setting, including the following: • Goals focus student and teacher attention on the learning task and the learning target. • Goals stimulate appropriate student effort. • Goals increase student persistence. • Goals increase a student’s desire and capacity to learn new strategies. • From: Advancing Formative Assessment in Every Classroom. Assessment and Goal Setting Framework: Priorities for 2019-20 • Streamlined goal setting process that that uses metrics aligned to Louisiana’s accountability system at all levels (student, teacher, cluster, school, and district) • LEAP-like Benchmark Assessments that help track progress toward EOY goals every marking period • Provide the right data to JPS teachers and administrators so that they can develop thoughtful goals for each individual student they serve • Support JPS educators in setting goals that they find meaningful and using Benchmark Assessments to track progress • Illuminate assessment platform to house data • Data analyzed collaboratively in Clusters

  9. Step 1: Model 4th Grade ELA Teacher • SLT 1: • Data needed: LEAP 2025 scaled score for each student • (use diagnostic if LEAP 2025 not available) • SLT 2: • Data needed: LEAP 2025 achievement score for each student • (use diagnostic if LEAP 2025 not available)

  16. Step 4: Use JPS’s Goal Setting Dashboard Use goals teachers set for each individual student from these two columns and input in Dashboard. Pull Baseline data for Dashboard from these two columns.

  17. Dashboard • A progress monitoring tool (used for more than just setting SLT’s) • Automates calculations to allow users to quickly see how they are doing • May be shared so that both teachers and their MT’s, Principals, or other evaluators may see data for each teacher and content area

Step 5: Determine and Review SLT Ranges • Recommended SLT ratings have been provided from the district. • Deviation from these recommendations must include a rationale that is approved by the evaluator and included in the teacher’s SLT uploaded to CIS.   19. Step 6: Present and input your goals for approval • Evaluators should engage in a goal-setting conversation with each teacher while viewing the completed Goal Setting Dashboard for that teacher. • Teachers should input their approved SLTs into CIS. Page 15, Teacher Goal Setting and SLT Guide
