How to Use this Tutorial Welcometo the eMAR Introductory Tutorial. electronic Medication Administration Record This tutorial will give you general knowledge of how the eMAR is used to document medication administration.
Course Objectives Purpose: The purpose of this tutorial is to provide you with an overview of using the eMAR to document medication administration. Prior to accessing the eMAR, you must first log into eKiDs PowerChart and open the patient’s chart. In the following lessons you will learn: • How to Access the eMAR • Some benefits of using the eMAR • How to chart medication tasks on the eMAR • How to add an Administrative Note • How to review the eMAR Summary
Lesson One: Accessing the eMAR in eKiDsPowerChart You can open a patient’s chart from the Patient Access List by double clicking on their name. This action will open the selected patient’s chart in eKiDs PowerChart where you can select the MAR chart tab.

Lesson One: What are the Benefits of Using the eMAR? • Provides an easily accessible online comprehensive view of a patient’s medication administration record that is similar to the paper view • Prevents medication records from being lost or misfiled • Provides information regarding all statuses of medications • Can chart medication administration directly from the eMAR • Can access patient information from the eMAR
Lesson One: Who Will Use the eMAR? Only staff that will need to document patient medication administration. Who….. will be using the eMAR
Lesson Two: eMAR Chart Tab The MAR (also referred to as the eMAR) chart tab is where medication administration is documented.
Lesson Two: eMAR Chart Tab The eMAR will default open to the current 24 hour time period. To change the time period and indicate a specific time frame for which tasks and results are to be displayed, right click the information bar and select Change Search Criteria. The search criteria box is displayed and the dates and time can be changed as needed.
Lesson Two: eMAR Chart Tab • The MAR includes two sections • The Navigator Section The medications that are displayed can be controlled by selecting or deselecting the check box next to the medication type such as: • Scheduled • Unscheduled • PRN • Continuous Infusions It is important to note that you may not see all medications on the MAR if you deselect a medication type or it has scrolled out of view. When you click the Refresh button all medications types will again be selected.
Lesson Two: eMAR Chart Tab • Medication Section • Displays all medications for the patient for the selected timeframe. • The medication information displayed is: • Name • Order details • Order comments
Lesson Two: eMAR Chart Tab The MAR will display the following icons in the medication section to indicate the presence of a nurse to nurse or pharmacy to nurse communication.
Lesson Three: Charting Activities in the MARCharting a Medication Task • To chart a medication task, open the patient’s chart and select the MAR chart tab. • Click the pending task, or right click and select Chart Details to open the charting window. • Review any defaulted information for accuracy and edit as needed. • Complete any required fields which are highlighted in yellow.
Lesson Three: Charting Activities in the MARCharting a Medication Task • Depending on the type of task, the components of the medication charting window will vary. • All system required fields will be highlighted in yellow. • Complete the required fields and click the checkmark in the upper left hand corner of the window to chart the information.
Lesson Three: Charting Activities in the MARCharting a Medication Task • Performed date/time: The current date and time will default but can be changed if appropriate. • Performed by: The system will capture the clinician documenting the information. This can be changed to another clinician, if appropriate and in accordance with hospital policy. • Witnessed by: A witness to the medication administration can be captured if the order has been defined to require a second signature. (Not all medications will require a witness.) • To complete the charting task, click the green checkmark in the upper left hand corner.
Lesson Three: Charting Activities in the MARCharting a Medication Task • These additional functions can easily be charted from the MAR by a right click of the mouse: • Rescheduling a Single Medication Dose (Rescheduling administration times for recurring medication administration will only be done by pharmacy at this time) • Requesting another dose from the pharmacy • Modifying a charted task • Uncharting a medication task • Charting a medication task as not given • Creating an Administrative Note

Lesson Three: Charting Activities in the MARCharting a Medication Task Charting Titratable Drips When all information is entered, click apply and sign to chart the medication administration. The dose pulls in from the order and calculated rate based on the patient’s weight. The weight pulls in from the last calculated dosing weight.
Lesson Three: Charting Activities in the MARCharting a Medication Task • Additional IV charting activities that can be accessed with a right click of the mouse are: • Modify an IV event • Unchart an IV event • View history of IV infusion events
Lesson Three: Charting Activities in the MARCharting a Medication Task For a nurse to nurse communication an administrative note (Admin Note) can be created and associated with a medication in the MAR. For example, “patient likes to take medication with food.” • Right click on the medication and select Create Admin Note. • Enter the note in the Admin Note form. • Click OK. Lesson Four: The Mar Summary Tab • The MAR Summary tab provides a View Only display of a patient’s medication administration record. • Right click on the blue bar to set specific time frame and intervals. • You can also right click on a medication name to access additional order details.
