  2. Entry Task • Which President was he? 37th President. • What time period was he elected? 1969-1974 • Describe what you see in the political cartoon on the right.

About Nixon • Born in January 9, 1913 at Yorba Linda, California. • Graduated from Whittier College in 1934 and went to the Duke University School of Law in 1937. • Served in the United States Navy during WWII. • Was in service for 1942-1946. • Was Dwight Eisenhower’s vice president for 8 years. • Elected on January 20, 1969 and resigned August 9, 1974.

About Nixon (cont.) • Nixon as a presidential candidate promised to end U.S military involvement in the Vietnam War . • Nixon also had a different approach to the cold war which was the Hisbold Program that redefined America’s relations with the two titans of communism, China and the Soviet Union. • From his first days in office he was determined to leave his mark on the Nations internationals affairs during the 1960’s and 70’s.

Richard Nixon and Earth • Richard Nixon created the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and many Acts that protected the environment. • Environmental Protection Agency – An agency that was created to protect human health and environment by specifically enforcing regulations passed by Congress. • The Clean Air Act – Controlled air pollution nationally by enforcing regulations to protect people from airborne contaminants that can be hazardous to human health. • The Clean Water Act – Governed water pollution by preventing point and nonpoint pollution sources. • The Endangered Species Act – Specifically designed to protect endangered species from being harmed in any way.

Your Assignment • Go to http://www.washingtonpost.com/watergate • On a sheet of a paper summarize in your OWNwords what you think the Watergate scandal really was. • Explain how the story relates to, or helped to cause, the fall of the presidency. • We will watch the Watergate legacy video altogether, then you will look at all the parts of the Watergate story. (You will take individual notes on this) • MAKE SURE TO TAKE GOOD NOTES AS WELL.
