  1. Gerunds and gerund phrases Ms. Aden You may be wondering, what in the world?What are Gerunds and Gerund Phrases? Well…

  2. What is a Gerund? • A gerund is a verbal that ends in -ing and functions as a noun. The term verbal indicates that a gerund is based on a verb and therefore expresses action or a state of being.

  3. Side Note • However, since a gerund functions as a noun, it occupies some positions in a sentence that a noun ordinarily would, for example: subject, direct object, subject complement, and object of preposition (You will learn about these at a later time) • Great News! A gerund virtually never requires any punctuation with it! Yay! 

  5. Gerund as a Subject • Traveling might satisfy your desire for new experiences. (Traveling is the gerund.) • The study abroad program might satisfy your desire for new experiences. (The gerund has been removed.)

  6. Gerund as a Direct Object • They do not appreciate my singing. (The gerund is singing.) • They do not appreciate my assistance. (The gerund has been removed)

  7. Gerund as object of Preposition • The police arrested him for speeding. (Hey, what’s the gerund here?) • How could you say this without the gerund? Ex: The police arrested him for criminal activity. (The gerund has been removed.)

  8. Now that you know… • Create two sentences using gerunds – when you’re done turn to the person next to you and share your sentences. Did your partner use the gerund correctly?Remember: A gerund is a verbal that ends in -ing and functions as a noun. The term verbal indicates that a gerund is based on a verb and therefore expresses action or a state of being.
