  1. Glendon Africa Network Presents:International African Seminar/A Cultural Fiesta: 2009 • An expose on African economic issues and technological development as they relate to the continent’s place in international society in the 21st century • A celebration of African arts and culture

  2. Brief History: • Glendon Africa Network is an academic organization for all ethnic groups. The club works to improve the multicultural interactions of students at Glendon College. It provides students of African descent and Glendon students with an enhanced understanding of African lifestyle and identity. • The club aims to foster knowledge about Africa through culturally appropriate arts, workshops, the 2009 international conference, and sponsorship of disadvantaged African children.

  3. Aim • To execute Glendon African Network’s first African conference/cultural fiesta at Glendon Campus on April 16th and 17th 2009, entitled “The International African Seminar/A Cultural Fiesta”. This conference will offer participants opportunity to learn more about African culture, economic development and empowerment achieved through scientific and other academic advancement. Glendon Africa Network believe that knowledge is power, and aspire to educate the students and faculty at Glendon about the continent Africa and its place in international society. • GAN workshops/seminars during this event will also focus on performance and visual arts to convey our message of peace, love and African vibrancy. We will enlist the skills of artists, poets, drum groups, dance groups, recognized guest speakers and lay people who represent the dynamic history and positive development of the African develop.

Why is this Conference important to Glendon Campus? • The conference will provide Glendon students and faculty members a unique social and educational opportunity to explore the African identity and relevant issues. The speakers and other academics who will be present represent a broad background of experience in various fields. The Glendon Africa Network hopes to open dialogue and facilitate awareness of Africa’s cultural, social, and economic environment as it relates to the global arena. GAN wishes to highlight the importance of collective organization to bring about long-term development in Africa. Purpose • Generate awareness about culture and current affairs on the African continent. • Discuss the economy of African nations and the role of scientific advancement in its resurgence in the 21st century •  Empower Glendon and York students and community members to share ideas about the African identity

  5. Audience: • We expect more than 2000 students and external visitors. Students to be invited include: students from Glendon Campus, students from Keele Campus, student representatives from other colleges and universities in Toronto and External speakers and Professors. • Date: April 16/ 17th, 2009(extension of Black history month) • Cultural day begins on the April 16th 2009 between 12pm -4pm • Conference/seminar starts on April 17th, 2009 between 12pm -4pm • Speaker’s anticipated time: 30-35 minutes each • Location: Cafeteria and Manor hall

  6. Presentation • On April 17th, the key speakers will present our first Poetry publication and lunching. They will also present Poetry Winner Certificates for three outstanding poets and other prizes for competitors in the GAN poetry competition held in 2007. • There will be a Band display to welcome our key speakers and guest speakers on the April 17th, 2009

KENNETH MACROBERTS(CHIEF GUEST OF HONOR) • PRINCIPLE, GlENDON COLLEGE, YORK UNIVERSITY • Dr. Philip Emeagwali ( African US computer Scientist) • Dr. Uwafiokun Idemudia (Assistant Professor, International Development and African studies; Division of Social Studies • Dr. Josue Dione (Director, Sustainable Development Division, UN Economic Commission for Africa • Dr. Vincent Del Buono( Former UN international adviser for crime prevention and criminal justice in Vienna from 1994 to 1998, Senior fellow Glendon Public policy and international affairs school of graduate studies.

Skype, E-mail • What will we need for the speakers? • Might need a translator • DVD Player • Will need a good speaker system • image magnification rear screen projection • Wireless lavaliere microphone • Three mobile laptop stands or equivalent
