  3. What is labour day? Labour day was first a strike for people who were trying to get an 8 hour working day and a 40 hour working week . In 1840 a man named Samuel Parnell was the first one to get an 8 hour day and a 40 hour working week In Wellington. Samuel Parnell was a carpenter. The first Labour Day was first celebrated in New Zealand on the 28 October 1890 when thousands of when several thousand trade union members and supporters attended parades in the main centres. Government employees were given the day off to attend the parades. Samuel Parnell 1890

  4. Who is Samuel Parnell? • Samuel Duncan Parnell, a carpenter and joiner by trade, initiated the eight hour working day in Wellington. He is said to have been born in London, England, on 19 February 1810, the son of Joan Duncan and her husband, James Parnell, gentleman. Parnell's interest in a shorter working day dated back to 1834, when he was working in a large joinery establishment in Theobald's Road, London. There he engaged in vigorous debates with his workmates, whom he later described as 'a lot of the most red-hot radicals'. London carpenters then worked 12 and even 14 hours a day, and wages and working conditions were bad. A union had been formed but, because it failed to agitate for reduced working hours, Parnell refused to join and left to start in business on his own account.

  5. How does NZ celebrate Labour Day? • Early Labour Day parades drew huge crowds in places such as Palmerston North and Napier as well as in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin. Unionists and supporters marched behind colourful banners and ornate floats, and the parades were followed by popular picnics and sports events. • These parades also had a political purpose. Although workers in some industries had long enjoyed an eight-hour day, it was not a legal entitlement. Other workers, including seamen, farm labourers, and hotel, restaurant and shop employees, still worked much longer hours. Many also endured unpleasant and sometimes dangerous working conditions. Unionists wanted the Liberals to pass legislation enforcing an eight-hour day for all workers, but the government was reluctant to antagonise the business community. • What the Liberals did do was make Labour Day a holiday. The Labour Day Act of 1899 created a statutory public holiday on the second Wednesday in October, first celebrated in 1900. The holiday was 'Mondayised' in 1910, and since then it has been held on the fourth Monday in October.

  8. What do I think about Labour Day? • I think it was a good idea to have labour day and we should keep it around for longer so that our future generations can share a holiday that we once had. I like the fact the government has let labour day go on for so long and I also like the fact that we also get a free day off. • Hohipere Te Amo Rm17 2009
