  1. Read to Grow and change A reading incentive program for 3rd Grade Students at Union Mill Elementary School

  2. An Incentive to Read Silently • Our goal is to increase stamina and comprehension for our third grade readers in independent silent reading. • Sustained Silent Reading (SSR) will be the primary focus (4 days a week for 15-20 minutes) • Drop Everything And Read as buddy reading will be a secondary focus (once per week for 20-30 minutes)

  3. Growing a caterpillar bookworm • Students will be encouraged to choose from a broad range of genres. • Each Genre will be represented by a specific color circle on a wall display of the bookworm caterpillar. • Add a circle to the bookworm for each book read. On the circle they will write the book title and their name. • Each class will grow their caterpillars long enough to meet up together with the other classes’ caterpillars in the hall way.

  4. Other incentive objectives • Reading across new genres to encourage a broader reading comfort and appreciation for a variety of age and developmentally appropriate reading materials. • Biography & Autobiography • Fantasy & Science Fiction • Historical Fiction • Realistic Fiction • Nonfiction Informational • Poetry • Periodicals • Humor • Mystery

  5. Caterpillar Genre Colors • Biography & Autobiography = red circles • Realistic Fiction= dark green circles • Fantasy & Science Fiction = light blue circles • Historical fiction = orange circles • Nonfiction Informational= light green circles • Mystery = yellow circles • Poetry = pink circles • Humor= purple circles • Periodicals= white circles

  6. Other incentive objectives • Reading with others during the Drop Everything And Read (D.E.A.R) time which will be a buddy reading experience • For every new buddy that a child reads with during our once weekly DEAR times or our buddy classes each child will make a leg for our Growing Caterpillar Bookworm

  7. Other incentive objectives • Recognizing that reading enriches the students’ lives and helps them to grow and change in their understanding of the world around them • Snuggle Up With a Book… caterpillar displays will be changed to a chrysalis • Change… Butterflies will emerge in each classroom. • This coincides with Living Systems Science objectives when spring live caterpillars and butterflies are in the classroom.

  8. Incentive Celebrations • Classrooms will have a set goal for which the students are reaching for. • Achieving a goal will earn the class a new book or books with a BUTTERFLY theme for their classroom library. • Individual students will keep track of their reading on a Growth Chart which tracks the number of books and the genres they read. • Teachers may choose to give incentive tickets to students. Tickets are collected toward class treasure box visits.
