  2. Agenda • Introduce the concept of “coaching” • What does coaching mean to you as a leader? • When to coach and when to seek outside assistance • How to be receptive to being coached

  3. Questions • What does coaching mean to you? • Why was coaching used? • What skills did the coach use? • What made coaching effective in that situation?

  4. What is Coaching? Probing Evoking Listening Teaching Challenging Mentoring

  5. What Questions Do You Ask? • What will happen if… • What are your other options? • What support to you need to accomplish that? • Where do you go from here? • If the same thing happened again, what would you do?

  6. How “Coachable” Are You? • Are you focused on the future or stuck in the past? • Do you listen to the rationale for change or defend the status quo? • Do your discussions revolve around intent to change and how to make it happen, or do you continue to debate the need to do so

  7. How “Coachable” Are You? • Can you take an objective look at yourself and your actions? • Can you let go of core beliefs and stories? • Can you see the positive reasons and higher payoffs for change versus the cost of maintaining the status quo?

  8. How “Coachable” Are You? • Do you partner with others to move forward? • Are your intentions to change converted into an action plan, or do they remain a secondary priority?

  9. Hold ‘em or Fold em’? • When should a leader coach? • When should a leader seek outside assistance?

  10. Mason’s Workplace Coaches • Workplace Coaching is a service in which a trained peer from within the Mason community helps faculty and staff address a workplace issue they are facing

  11. Mason’s Workplace Coaches • Coaches are available to help you to: • Clearly identify the issue • Clarify perceptions • Identify desirable outcomes and options • Develop and plan for a chosen plan of action
