  3. 2011 NERAOC – Session #32Managing the Matching Dilemma 1. Determine Available Matching Dollars • Split total “general fund” budget into categories: a. Instructional b. Administrative and Indirect c. Possible Match • Get creative with formula match commitments – is there anything that falls into pool ‘b’ that could be used as match?

  4. 2011 NERAOC – Session #32Managing the Matching Dilemma 2. Track Match Commitments • Split possible match by PI, Program, and/or Unit. • Pull non-administrative committed match for federal appropriations right off the top of the possible match pool. • List any other match commitments (proposed or awarded) for quick-glance availability.

  5. 2011 NERAOC – Session #32Managing the Matching Dilemma • Look for Institutional Partnerships • Find existing expertise outside the unit or institution. • Build relationships with other researchers, agents, and faculty. • Consider an integrated approach to research proposals. Not only does this allow the project to draw on a larger pool of knowledge, it also allows it to draw on a larger pool of match!

  6. 2011 NERAOC – Session #32Managing the Matching Dilemma 4. Value Third-Party Collaborations • The private sector can provide valuable avenues for collaboration. • Small contributions can make a big difference! • Expands outreach opportunities.

  7. 2011 NERAOC – Session #32Managing the Matching Dilemma 5. Use Tools to Simplify and Demystify the Pre-Award Process Make it make sense to you and your investigators so that every funding opportunity is just that: An opportunity!
