  6. Introduction Mark's Gospel invites the reader to accompany the disciples as they (and we) get to know more about Jesus Jesus teaches and models that his disciples are to be like him - they (and we) are called to 'take up the cross and follow me'

  7. 1. The beginning of the good news (gospel) about Jesus - Messiah, Son of God Mark 1 1-13 2-8. John the Baptist comes proclaiming 'one is more powerful than he is and will baptise you with the Holy Spirit. 9-11. Jesus is baptised and as he comes out of the river, the Holy Spirit descends on him like a dove, and the voice from heaven speaks to Jesus - You are my Son, whom I love. 12-13. At once, the Spirit sent him (Greek 'drove him') into the wilderness to battle against temptation of Satan and wild animals

  9. Mark 1 1-13 1. Jesus is the Messiah and Son of God. The rest of the gospel narrative will explain what these mean. 2. In Mark's gospel, Jesus commands people to 'follow me' by 'taking up their cross and becoming one of his disciples. 3. Jesus 'models' how this can happen - by choosing to live fully open to the power of the Holy Spirit. This is the key theme of the introduction: 'not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit….' (Zechariah 4.6)
