Benefits of participating in COS Expertise • Add your profile at no cost for: • Recognition –promote your work locally, nationally and globally to 1000 academic, media, government and corporate organizations. • An instant home page – your profile has a unique URL that you can use as a home page. • Free research services – registering gives you a COS Workbench and access to free database services. • Easy CV management – keep your profile up-to-date and use it to create versions of your CV instantly.

  8. To Create your COS Account and COS Expertise profile go to www.cos.com and click on the ‘New User? Register Free’ link on the left side of the page.

  9. Click ‘Join’ to continue the registration process.

  10. You’ll need to provide your e-mail, Name, Country, Organization, School and Department.

  11. You will need to create a username and password and if you’d like, include your address information. When you’re finished, click ‘ Create my Account.’

  12. You will be taken to a confirmation page. Based on your institutional affiliation a COS Expertise profile will be created for you. Click the COS Profile link to add information to enter your COS Workbench and add information to your profile.

  13. Click on any of the sections on the left to add information to your profile.

  14. You can type your information or copy and paste it from another source into your COS Expertise Profile.

  16. Tip: If you have forgotten your username and password, follow the ‘Forgot Your Password?’ link and we will send them to you. Tip: If you are working from your desk, select the ‘Save My Login’ box so that, in the future, you can simply click ‘Log in’ without needing to enter your username and password each time. Updating your COS Expertise Profile and Entering your COS Workbench Enter your username and password at www.cos.com and click ‘Log In’

  17. A COS Workbench This takes you to your COS Workbench homepage. From this page you can update your Expertise profile, manage your Funding Searches, and access training opportunities offered by COS. Click any profile section in the left column to start editing your Expertise profile.

  18. Tip: If your profile is complete and up-to-date, you may simply click on “Click to Verify,” which will indicate to those searching that the profile has been reviewed and is still current.

  20. Use your profile’s unique MyProfile URL Every profile has a unique URL that allows you to share your profile with anyone, regardless of their COS membership status. It is formed as follows: http://myprofile.cos.com/username Your MyProfile URL can be found both on your COS Workbench as well as the bottom of your COS Expertise profile.

  21. This is the MyProfile view that others will see when they access your MyProfile link. For example, make it part of your e-mail signature.

  22. Customize Your MyProfile When you direct people to view your MyProfile online, you can personalize what they see! This will not affect your profile when it is viewed through the COS Expertise search interface.

  23. For example, you can hide all your contact information except your email address if that is your preferred method of communication. Simply click on the links in the left column to hide fields, re-order your profile, or customize the color scheme

  24. Produce your CV Turn your COS Expertise profile into a curriculum vitae, or résumé.

  25. Choose which sections to include by selecting the boxes. Then, choose their layout order. Finally, click ‘Submit layout for processing’.

  26. Select the individual elements – e.g., publications – that you wish to be included. Then click the ‘Submit form for processing’ button at the bottom of the page.

  27. Tip: Maintain your publications, grants received and other information in your profile. Create versions of your CV as needed, instead of trying to keep several versions of your CV on your hard drive up-to-date. This opens your word processing application with a copy of your CV open. (In some browsers, you will have to save it to disk and then open it.) You can now edit and save it as you would any document.

  29. Access Services from Anywhere Use your Workbench to access Expertise, Funding and other COS services on or off campus. Simply click on the appropriate tab.

Tips: • Your username must be unique. • Your username forms part of the unique URL of your profile: http://myprofile.cos.com/username. • Both username and password must be 4-15 characters long. • They are not case sensitive. • Permitted characters are listed on the ‘Change User ID’ Web page. Key in your new User ID or password then click ‘Change User ID’ or ‘ Change Password.’

  32. Your COS Workbench will tell you who your campus liaison is. This is the person at your institution who you can contact should you need their assistance. We also provide a link to the COS Help Desk for technical issues.

  33. COS provides online training for all users that would like to learn more about using our products. You can access the training link at the top of your COS Workbench, along with any other pertinent news from COS.

  34. Feel free to enroll in any of our training courses.

  35. With your COS Expertise Profile and COS Workbench You Can ….. • Be identified as a potential collaborator by the academic, media, government, sponsor and corporate organizations that use COS Expertise. • Use the unique URL of your profile as a home page (http://myprofile.cos.com/username). • Create your CV instantly from your profile. • Use COS services from any Internet connection.
