NRMRL Mining Activities Rocky Mountain Regional HSRC Briefing October 9, 2002 Trish Erickson, Acting ALD-Waste 513.569.7406 erickson.patricia@epa.gov
Relevant Activities • Mining-Specific • EPA/DOE Mine Waste Technology Program • SITE Demonstrations • Research • Technical Assistance & Technology Transfer • Mining-Related • Watershed Protection & Restoration • Contaminated Sediments
EPA/DOE Mine Waste Technology Program • At-Source Controls • mine sealing, in-situ SRB reactors • Water Treatment Options • passive and low-maintenance • As, CN-, Hg, NO3, Se • Revegetation/Stabilization • Technology Transfer
EPA/DOE Mine Waste Technology Program • FY02 Proposal Solicitation Emphasis • source control for prevention of metal release and acid rock drainage • Treatments for low flows in remote settings • Major Meetings • 2002 Hardrock Mining Conference • 2003 Mining Impacts on Tribal Lands Roger Wilmoth 513.569.7509 www.epa.gov/ORD/NRMRL/std/mtb
SITE Demonstrations • Current Projects • Leviathan Mine • lime lagoons, constructed wetlands, biphasic lime treatment • Completed Projects • Constructed Wetlands (Colorado DPHE) • Clay-Based Grouting Annette Gatchett 513.569.7697 www.epa.gov/ORD/NRMRL/SITE
Research: Permeable Reactive Barrier for Arsenic Treatment • Pilot-scale Fe(0) PRB at East Helena smelter site • Performance over time • Mechanisms • Impact on site hydrogeochemistry • Longevity • Associated lab studies Rick Wilkin, 580.436.8874 Bob Puls, 580.436.8543
Research: Penn MineMicrobiology and Geochemistry Overview: Acid drainage (Cu, Zn, Cd) from the Penn Mine discharges into Camanche Reservoir via ground water and surface water runoff. Remediation efforts have targeted above ground contamination. This project investigates subsurface geochemical and microbiological processes that impact subsurface contaminant fluxes to the reservoir. Rick Wilkin, 580.436.8874 with Charles Alpers, USGS
Technical Assistance & Tech Transfer • Site-specific assistance to many mine sites • Site characterization • Remedy screening/prioritization • Remedy selection • Performance evaluation • Technology transfer • Documents • Meetings Ed Bates 513.569.7774 www.epa.gov/ttbnrmrl
Technical Support • Semi-passive water treatments • Rock-filled bioreactors at Rio Tinto, Leviathan • Conventional bioreactor at Lutrell • Oxidation/precipitation at Opportunity Ponds • Alternative alkali selection at Leviathan
