  5. God created man in His own image • "imago dei" - Latin words for "image of God" • We see this idea reiterated several times • (1:26,27; 5:1; 9:6)

  6. What does "imago dei" mean? • to be created in God's image is to distinguish humans from the rest of God's creation

  7. What does "imago dei" mean? • to be created in God's image is to distinguish humans from the rest of God's creation • we "have inherent value independent of our utility or function"

  8. How is the "image of God" realized in mankind? • In at least five ways: • rational, moral, volitional, relational, and creative expression.

  9. Rational Likeness • we can think • we can be self-aware • we can have purpose • we are capable of analyzing and solving problems • we can communicate • with God, and • other people

  10. Moral Likeness • we have an awareness of good and evil accompanied with a desire to do good

  11. Volitional Likeness • we are free to make real decisions, not predetermined by fate

  12. Relational Likeness • we have the capacity for love

  13. Creative Expression • we have God-given abilities to fashion, out of raw materials, practical, beautiful, and (sadly) even harmful entities

  14. Implications related to this concept that we are created in the image of God: • both men and women treat each other as partners in life

  15. Implications related to this concept that we are created in the image of God: • to understand we have been created in the image of God conditions how we treat every other person

  16. Implications related to this concept that we are created in the image of God: • we have been created with an ability to have a relationship with God

  17. We were created in His image, but we have lost it, or it has been marred due to sin. • Now through faith in His Son, that image is being found in us again.

  18. Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and the image of God will once again • be realized.
