  1. Romans Chapter 10

  2. THE GOSPEL AS IT RELATES TO ISRAEL – SALVATION REJECTED BY ISRAEL (10:1-21). • Paul’s strong desire for his brethren Israel to be saved (v.1). • In Chapter nine Paul stated that only the remnant would be saved of Israel. • “25As He says also in Hosea, "I WILL CALL THOSE WHO WERE NOT MY PEOPLE, 'MY PEOPLE,‘ AND HER WHO WAS NOT BELOVED, 'BELOVED.'" 26"AND IT SHALL BE THAT IN THE PLACE WHERE IT WAS SAID TO THEM, 'YOU ARE NOT MY PEOPLE,' THERE THEY SHALL BE CALLED SONS OF THE LIVING GOD." 27 Isaiah cries out concerning Israel, "THOUGH THE NUMBER OF THE SONS OF ISRAEL BE LIKE THE SAND OF THE SEA, IT IS THE REMNANT THAT WILL BE SAVED; 28FOR THE LORD WILL EXECUTE HIS WORD ON THE EARTH, THOROUGHLY AND QUICKLY." 29And just as Isaiah foretold,“ UNLESS THE LORD OF SABAOTH HAD LEFT TO US A POSTERITY, WE WOULD HAVE BECOME LIKE SODOM, AND WOULD HAVE RESEMBLED GOMORRAH.” (Rom. 9:25-29)

  3. THE GOSPEL AS IT RELATES TO ISRAEL – SALVATION REJECTED BY ISRAEL (10:1-21). • Israel seeking to establish a righteousness of their own (v. 2-5). 1. They manifest zeal, but not according to knowledge. 2. They do not submit to the righteousness established by God. 3. Christ is the end of the law for righteousness. 4. Righteousness by law demands living perfectly according to law.

  4. THE GOSPEL AS IT RELATES TO ISRAEL – SALVATION REJECTED BY ISRAEL (10:1-21). They manifest zeal, but not according to knowledge. (v.2) They do not submit to the righteousness established by God. (v.3) •  ”26"Brethren, sons of Abraham's family, and those among you who fear God, to us the message of this salvation has been sent.  27"For those who live in Jerusalem, and their rulers, recognizing neither Him nor the utterances of the prophets which are read every Sabbath, fulfilled these by condemning Him. 28"And though they found no ground for putting Him to death, they asked Pilate that He be executed. 29"When they had carried out all that was written concerning Him, they took Him down from the cross and laid Him in a tomb. 30"But God raised Him from the dead; 31and for many days He appeared to those who came up with Him from Galilee to Jerusalem, the very ones who are now His witnesses to the people.” (Acts 13:26-31).

  5. THE GOSPEL AS IT RELATES TO ISRAEL – SALVATION REJECTED BY ISRAEL (10:1-21). • Zeal but not according to knowledge. • Almost the same example of the worship the Samaritans offered before the establishment of the church. • “19The woman said to Him, "Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet. 20"Our fathers worshiped in this mountain, and you people say that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship." 21Jesus said to her, "Woman, believe Me, an hour is coming when neither in this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father.22"You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23"But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers. 24"God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth." (John 4:19-24)

  6. THE GOSPEL AS IT RELATES TO ISRAEL – SALVATION REJECTED BY ISRAEL (10:1-21). • Not subjecting themselves to the righteousness of God. • “17For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, "BUT THE RIGHTEOUS man SHALL LIVE BY FAITH.“” (Rom. 1:17) • The “faith” we are talking about is active faith, the faith that leads to obedience: EMMUNA.

  7. THE GOSPEL AS IT RELATES TO ISRAEL – SALVATION REJECTED BY ISRAEL (10:1-21). • Christ is the end of the law for righteousness. (v.4) • “7But whatever things were gain to me, those things I have counted as loss for the sake of Christ. 8More than that, I count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them but rubbish so that I may gain Christ, 9and may be found in Him, not having a righteousness of my own derived from the Law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which comes from God on the basis of faith,” (Phill. 3:7-9).

  8. THE GOSPEL AS IT RELATES TO ISRAEL – SALVATION REJECTED BY ISRAEL (10:1-21). • “22But the Scripture has shut up everyone under sin, so that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe. 23But before faith came, we were kept in custody under the law, being shut up to the faith which was later to be revealed. 24Therefore the Law has become our tutor to lead us to Christ, so that we may be justified by faith. 25But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor. 26For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.” (Gal. 3:22-26)

  9. THE GOSPEL AS IT RELATES TO ISRAEL – SALVATION REJECTED BY ISRAEL (10:1-21). • Righteousness by law demands living perfectly according to law. (v.5) • “And admonished them in order to turn them back to Your law. Yet they acted arrogantly and did not listen to Your commandments but sinned against Your ordinances, By which if a man observes them he shall live And they turned a stubborn shoulder and stiffened their neck, and would not listen.” (Neh. 9:29; Lev. 18:5; Ezeq. 20:11; 13; 21)

  10. THE GOSPEL AS IT RELATES TO ISRAEL – SALVATION REJECTED BY ISRAEL (10:1-21). • Righteousness which is of faith is accessible to all – just as the law of Moses was accessible to Israel (v. 6-15, cf. Deut. 30:12-14). 1. One does not have to ascend into heaven or descend to the abyss – word is nigh in the preaching. (v. 6-8) -One does not need to do things which are near impossible to do, one only needs to have obedient faith in God. (Rom. 1:5; 16:26; Gal. 5:6; James 2:26)

  11. THE GOSPEL AS IT RELATES TO ISRAEL – SALVATION REJECTED BY ISRAEL (10:1-21). 2. Salvation is received by submitting to the conditions: believe and confess. (v. 11-13) When we summit to the Lord, by our actions we show our faith. A manifestation of our dependence to Him. “'Now why do you delay? Get up and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on His name.‘” (Acts 22:16) "Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter.” (Matt. 7:21)

  12. THE GOSPEL AS IT RELATES TO ISRAEL – SALVATION REJECTED BY ISRAEL (10:1-21). 3. Being saved by believing upon and calling upon the Lord substantiated by Old Testament Scripture – Isa. 28:16. "And it will come about that whoever calls on the name of the LORD Will be delivered; For on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem There will be those who escape, As the LORD has said, Even among the survivors whom the LORD calls.” (Joel 2:32).

  13. THE GOSPEL AS IT RELATES TO ISRAEL – SALVATION REJECTED BY ISRAEL (10:1-21). 4. Calling upon the Lord demands necessary steps of preaching, hearing and believing. (v.13-15) “How lovely on the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news, who announces peace and brings good news of happiness, who announces salvation, and says to Zion, "Your God reigns!" (Isa. 52:7)

  14. THE GOSPEL AS IT RELATES TO ISRAEL – SALVATION REJECTED BY ISRAEL (10:1-21). • Calling on Him requires believing. • Believing requires Hearing. • Hearing requires a preacher (either from the divine scripture, John 20:30-31, or from one who reads from the scripture as he preaches.)

  15. THE GOSPEL AS IT RELATES TO ISRAEL – SALVATION REJECTED BY ISRAEL (10:1-21). Paul indicts Israel for not believing the message of God with Israel’s own Scripture (v. 16-21). 1. Not all hearken to the glad tidings – Israel of old did not. • “Who has believed our message? And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?” (Isa. 53:1). 2. Universality of God’s salvation prophesied by God in Scripture (cf. Deut. 32:21, Isa. 65:1,2).

  16. THE GOSPEL AS IT RELATES TO ISRAEL – SALVATION REJECTED BY ISRAEL (10:1-21). • Quotations • V. 18 – (Col. 1:6; 23; I Thess. 1:8) • V. 19- (Deut. 32:21; Rom. 11:11) • V.20- (Isa. 65:1; Rom. 9:30) • V.21- (Isa. 65:2)

  17. THE GOSPEL AS IT RELATES TO ISRAEL – SALVATION REJECTED BY ISRAEL (10:1-21). • A Few Facts • Faith comes through hearing, when the Jews heard their failure to obey was due to their resistance of the word. • Jews should have known the truth but they rejected it. • Gentiles heard the Gospel and obeyed, thus salvation came to them. • The Christians were the people who were not obstinate to God (v. 21)
