A day at the beach an environmental project by Year 5
Data analysis and observations • The majority of the rubbish collected was plastic items. • Too many cigarette butts were found in the sand. Pupils expressed their concerns about the health and safety of young children. • Absence of recycle bins at the beach. • No special pots or containers for smokers to dispose of their cigarette butts.
Pupils’ suggestions • Put no smoking signs on the beach! • Have the beach regularly cleaned by municipal cleaning staff. • Set up a team of volunteers to clean the beach on a regular basis. • Get the municipal police to fine those who leave rubbish on the beach. • Bring to the beach special pots or buckets filled with water or sand where smokers can put their cigarette butts. • Arrange a meeting with the mayor to express our concerns and ideas before this summer begins.
