3. Christopher Marlowe (1564-1593) Second only to that of Shakespeare
Born the son of a cobbler in Canterbury
Attended the Kings School? began as an incredible student, but absenteeism dominated his latter years.
Received his B.S. from Cambridge (1584) but was denied to pursue his Masters degree by the Queens Privy Council. He was involved in matters touching the benefit of his countrie.
Went to London and joined the University Wits.
Led a rather turbulent life.
4. Christopher MarloweContd. Loud, boisterous, violent and occasionally inebriated; this led Marlowe to gain many enemies (1589) dueled with William Bradley in the middle of a street over a longstanding grudge. They drew swords and fought. Marlowes friend, the poet, Thomas Watson approached and Christopher bowed out of the fight. Watson eventually plunged his sword into the chest of Bradley. Both men were exonerated & pardoned on the grounds of self-defense.
