  1. Mulige temaer for masteroppgave - forslag Jon Vislie  Teknologisk arbeidsledighet?

  7. International Economics

  8. What we’re working on • Innovation and trade. • Does trade policy affect firms’ incentives to innovate? E.g. WTO. • Important to understand the how technological progress depends on policy. • Currently studying the (global) universe of patents, over several decades • PATSTAT • Knowledge flows and trade. • We think that knowledge flows (imperfectly) between countries • Absorption may depend on trade as well • Business partners abroad, face-to-face meetings etc. • Can measure knowledge flows by citations in patent data. • Immigration and structural change. • Huge immigration shock in Norway 2004-today. Share of foreign born in population almost doubled from 7% to 13%. • How does immigration affect industrial structure? ..growth? • Not obvious if immigrant workers & capital are substitutes.

  9. What you can work on • Help us in any of the projects above. • Or work on any topic (weakly) related to international econ: • Trade agreements. E.g. controversy over TTIP (Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership). Impact on trade and welfare. • Trade and inequality. • And more • In practice: Find a country/time frame with a large shock (RTA, China competition, etc). Gather data on trade, wages, employment, +++

  10. IN SUM: Lots of exciting research possibilities. • Lots of data • International cross country/industry data. • Micro data from Norway (firm level, buyer-seller ++) .. And very engaged advisors.. • Andreas Moxnes andreamo@econ.uio.no ES 11th floor • Karen Helene Ulltveit-Moe k.h.ulltveit-moe@econ.uio.no Thanks!

MacroeconomicsMaster thesis • Some recent topics: • Coordination in Norwegian Wage Setting - Estimation of wage relations with heterogeneous labour • Impulses from abroad on Norwegian business cycles • Modellingthe final consumption expenditure of households • «System Dynamics» Presentation for master students at UiO February 2016

  20. Somepossible master thesisprojects • Corporate net lending (Erik Fjærli, efj@ssb.no) • Financial assets constitute a large fraction of total assets in the non-financial corporate sector in Norway but we know little about the sector's corresponding flows of funds (saving and lending). However, international comparisons by OECD show an international trend where firms seem to have shifted from being net borrowers to becoming net lenders. Using micro data (accounts and balance sheets) and ownership data covering the period 2000-2014, it should be possible to verify whether the same development has taken place in Norway and then eventually test alternative explanations for this change in investment behavior (Tax motives? Business cycles? Permanently less profitable domestic investment opportunities? Other? ). Alternatively, what are the macroeconomic implications of firms saving rather than investing in real assets? Candidates must have qualifications within corporate finance and econometrics. We expect candidates to independently work out a research proposal with references to relevant and up to date literature. • Accounting for ecosystem services from agricultural land and forests, with policy analysis for supporting the co-production of ecosystem services. (IulieAslaksen, iua@ssb.no) • Modeling household demand for energy commodities in a CGE model for Norway. (Brita Bye, bby@ssb.no) • Based on estimated parameters from detailed dataset of households income and expenditure, we can derive direct and cross price elasticities of different commodity nests, including energy goods, in a more aggregate consumer preference structure. The effects of energy and environmental policy analyses hinge on the empirical effects and modeling of consumer preferences. Presentation for master students at UiO February 2016
