How American’s Greet others • When we do introductions in America we say, • First person: “Hello, my name is Kayla.” • Second person: “Hello, my name is Jared.” • First person: “Nice to meet you Jared.” • Shake hands • Second person: “Nice to meet you too.” • You learned this in beginning English. I want you to learn how to properly shake hands. • Activity • Practice handshake with your neighbor along with the greeting.

Classroom expectations • Now that we have done introduction we need to understand what is expected in this class. • Bring a notebook and pen to every class • Be on time • Listen while others speak • Speak English only • No cell phones in class • No spitting in class • Be kind and encouraging to each other; no making fun of other students • Please throw garbage in the trash can • Be academically honest (do not help others on tests or quizes) • Bring your textbook to every class

What is Linking? • Linking is when the end of one word is connected or linked with the beginning of another word, creating a new or combined word. • Example: • I'm going to the post office. → po - sto – ffice • Please turn off the light. → tur- noff • Activity: Linking in greetings • Hey what’s up? → Hey wha-sup • How are you doing? → How you do-win • What’s going on? → What’s go-win-on

  7. What does Opinion mean? • Opinion means a personal view that you hold for yourself. It is your own notion, idea, or impression. • Example: • In my own opinion I am married to the most amazing man in the world. • In my opinion China has the kindest people in the world. • Activity: Share your own Opinion • With your partner share your opinion on littering in China. • Is it good? • Is it bad? • How do you respond to it?

What do you think? • What do you think of when you hear the word health? • Health means the condition of the body being without disease or ailment. • Example: • When you are healthy you are not sick. • In your opinion what is a healthy attitude? • Turn and read page two in your text book. • Tell me something about Andrew Carnegie. • What does generous mean? • Do you think it is a healthy attitude to be generous to others?

What is a Participation Grade? • A Participation grade are grades given for: • Bringing a notebook and pen to every class • Participating in class • Not sleeping • Being on time; not late. • Listening while others speak • Not spitting in class • Being academically honest (No cheating) • If you want an A, please try to do these things. • If students have missed class they are expected to get the homework from the class monitor or the Weebly website. No late work accepted.
