Making Areaworks Manor House We started with a disused clothing factory and an idea – to make a coworking community that cuts out the stuffy commute and uptight attitude, a place where people in the area can come, relax and work without any hassle. So we enlisted some help, and started – like we always do – making it work. What began as a small idea and a big warehouse has become our first coworking community in London, open for business. Making it wasn’t easy, but who says we don’t love a challenge? We painted the walls, we decided we didn’t like them, we painted them again. We built, we unbuilt, and we built again. We asked our first members for feedback, listened to what they needed, and started shaping our space for our community. One thing we always try to do is listen to our members, because we believe that co-creating, learning and changing with our members helps us all – we get a better workspace, you get a better place to work. Our first space in Manor House is a place close to our hearts, it’s where our founders grew up and started their first businesses in clothing and construction, and now, we want our space to be a place where others in the area can build their own dreams too. We’ve been busy creating a coworking community workspace that supports its’ members – making coworking, learning and growing in your area something we can all do.
We sourced a lot of our furniture in the area: from other local businesses, friends, from gumtree and furniture makers and upcyclers. We’ve repurposed, cut down and reused furniture and equipment from
our old clothing factory, and we’ve gone shopping in independent businesses and a couple of the big ones too – to make our space as comfortable as possible. During our recent revamp, we gave our old chairs to charity and we built the kitchen and shelving out of our spare desks. Our space has been a labour of love, from picking out the furniture, building the walls, taking them down again, to inviting North London’s businesses, council members, charities and start-up accelerators to come and work with us. Our space has already become a place where go-getters and self-starters in the area meet and work. We’ve been running weekly start-up workshops with Anthony Charles – one of our business community’s homegrown success stories. And we’ve hosted networking events for start- ups, freelancers and businesses in the area that have led to new collaborations and ventures. We’re proud to have hosted as part of Haringey GEW 2017 on subjects that help people in our community learn new skills. Making our space here in Manor House has been something we are all proud of, and it’s still very much a work in progress until now, because we believe we can always keep learning to make our space better for our members. In the meantime, Areaworks Manor House is open, come on in. Areaworks unit 5, Manor House, 2 Overbury Rd, Harringay Warehouse District, London N15 6RH, UK +44 20 3011 2311
