  1. Matthew 6 v 1 - 18Praying & Fasting

  2. Praying & Fasting

Matthew 6 Giving to the needy ‘Be careful not to practise your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.
  3. Praying & Fasting

Matthew 6 2‘So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honoured by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.
  4. Praying & Fasting

Matthew 6 3But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
  5. Praying & Fasting

Matthew 6 Prayer 5 ‘And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.
  6. Praying & Fasting

Matthew 6 6But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. 7 And when you
  7. Praying & Fasting

Matthew 6 pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.
  8. Praying & Fasting

Matthew 6 9 ‘This, then, is how you should pray: ‘“Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,10 your kingdom come, your will be done,    on earth as it is in heaven.
  9. Praying & Fasting

Matthew 6 11Give us today our daily bread.12 And forgive us our debts,    as we also have forgiven our debtors.13 And lead us not into temptation,     but deliver us from the evil one.”
  10. Praying & Fasting

Matthew 6 14 For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.
  11. Praying & Fasting

Matthew 6 Fasting 16 ‘When you fast, do not look sombre as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.
  12. Praying & Fasting

Matthew 6 Fasting 17But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, 18 so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father,
  13. Praying & Fasting

Matthew 6 Fasting who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

Philippians 2 Imitating Christ’s humility 2 Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and
  16. Praying & Fasting

Philippians 2 compassion, 2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above
  17. Praying & Fasting

Philippians 2 yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. 5 In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:

Philippians 2 6who, being in very nature God,did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;7 rather, he made himself nothingby taking the very nature of a servant,

Philippians 2     being made in human likeness.8 And being found in appearance as a man,    he humbled himself    by becoming obedient to death –        even death on a cross!
  20. Praying & Fasting

Philippians 2 9Therefore God exalted him to the highest place    and gave him the name that is above every name,10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,

Philippians 2     in heaven and on earth and under the earth,11 and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord,    to the glory of God the Father.

James 1 v 27 Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world

  28. Praying & Fasting

Galatians 5 13 - 23 Life by the Spirit 13 You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love.
  29. Praying & Fasting

Galatians 5 13 – 23 14For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’ 15 If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other.
  30. Praying & Fasting

Galatians 5 13 – 23 16So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want.
  31. Praying & Fasting

    Galatians 5 13 – 23 18But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. 19 The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft;
  32. Praying & Fasting

Galatians 5 13 – 23 hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.
  33. Praying & Fasting

Galatians 5 13 – 23 22But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

James 4 Submit yourselves to God What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? 2 You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what
  36. Praying & Fasting

James 4 you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God. 3 When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.
  37. Praying & Fasting

James 4 4 You adulterous people, don’t you know that friendship with the world means enmity against God? Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.
  38. Praying & Fasting

James 4 5 Or do you think Scripture says without reason that he jealously longs for the spirit he has caused to dwell in us? 6 But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says:
  39. Praying & Fasting

James 4 ‘God opposes the proud    but shows favour to the humble.’ 7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Come near to God and he will come near to you.

  42. Praying & Fasting

Leviticus 23:26-32 28Do not do any work on that day, because it is the Day of Atonement, when atonement is made for you before the Lord your God. 29 Those who do not deny themselves on that day must be cut off from their people.
  43. Praying & Fasting

Leviticus 23:26-32 30I will destroy from among their people anyone who does any work on that day. 31 You shall do no work at all. This is to be a lasting ordinance for the generations to come, wherever you live.

Leviticus 23:26-32 32It is a day of Sabbath rest for you, and you must deny yourselves. From the evening of the ninth day of the month until the following evening you are to observe your Sabbath.’

Isaiah 58 ‘Yet on the day of your fasting, you do as you please    and exploit all your workers.4 Your fasting ends in quarrelling and strife,    and in striking each other with wicked fists.

  53. Praying & Fasting

Isaiah 58 Is it only for bowing one’s head like a reed    and for lying in sackcloth and ashes? Is that what you call a fast,    a day acceptable to the Lord?
