  8. FREE KICK “GENERAL RULES” • Ball must be stationary • Kicked in any direction • No “second touch” • Opponents at least 10 yards away • Restart signal requirements • “Quick” restart • “Ceremonial” restart • Cannot score directly against self • Where offense occurred

  11. WHERE DOES THE RESTART OCCUR? Exception #1 If given to a team within its own goal area Location is anywhere in goal area

  12. WHERE DOES THE RESTART OCCUR? Exception #2 If given to attackers inside the opponents’ goal area IFK in opponent’s goal area is moved out to the nearest point on the goal area line

  15. Exception: You need to card a player for misconduct “QUICK” FREE KICK • Kicking team has a right to a quick restart if they wish to use it • Opponents must move at least 10 yards away • Opponents have no right to form a wall • As referee, encourage the “quick” restart

  16. “QUICK” FREE KICK • Do not interfere unless: • Kicking team requests enforcement • Encroachment is blatant and obvious • You are giving a card • Injury • No violation of the Law if kick taken quickly and ball goes directly to opponent closer than 10 yards • Remember to signal if IFK

  18. “CEREMONIAL” FREE KICK • As quickly as possible, clearly show everyone that they must wait for whistle • Be “first brick” in the wall - 10 yards • Bring opponents to you • Move to your next position • Signal for restart • When you are ready • As soon as possible DO NOT Repeat … DO NOT Pace off this distance!

  19. Failure to respect the required distance is a cautionable offense ENCROACHMENT 10 yards in all directions

But don’t hold the signal unnecessarily RESTART MECHANICS -- GENERAL • Point direction! • Players want/need to know if they are “attacking” or “defending” • Indicate IFK if appropriate • Players want/need to know if they can score directly from this kick • Indicate position of ball • Get out of the way and don’t interfere! Only if necessary – no “two-handed” signals!

  21. BALL IN PLAY VS. GOAL SCORED • Ball is “in play” when: • Kicked and moves and • Leaves penalty area (if appropriate) • Goal can be scored when: • Ball is “in play” • Ball is touched by 2nd player on IFK • Ball is kicked into opponents’ goal

REVIEW • Restart method after what type of stoppage? • An offense (Law 12, offside, others) • How many types of free kick are there? • Two -- what are they and what is the major difference between them? • DFK, goal can be scored directly • IFK, ball must touch another player before a goal can be scored

REVIEW • From where is the free kick taken? • General – where the offense occurred • Exception 1 – if in own goal area, anywhere in goal area • Exception 2 – if in opponent’ goal area, on goal area line nearest to offense • Can the ball be moving when taken? • No, it must be stationary • What direction must it be kicked? • Any direction is acceptable

REVIEW • Can the kicker touch it a second time? • No, IFK to opponents • How far away must opponents be? • General -- 10 yards • Exception – if in own penalty area, 10 yards and outside the penalty area • Exception – if within 10 yards of goal, closer than 10 yards only if on goal line between goal posts

  25. REVIEW • Can the kick be taken before opponents move 10 yards? • Yes, but … • Who can ask for 10 yards? • Kicking team may request, but… • Restart is now “ceremonial” and can’t be taken except by your signal
