Government • February 1990 - Ending of Cold War completed by President Reagan’s strong U.S. policies • June 1990 - U.S. President George H.W. Bush and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev sign a treaty eliminating chemical weapon production. • August 1990 - Iraq invades its neighbor, Kuwait, bringing U.S. involvement to the Gulf War • November 1990 - United Nations passes a resolution, #678, stating that Iraq must withdraw its forces from Kuwait by January 15, 1991 or face military intervention. • January 1991 - Operation Desert Storm begins with air strikes against Iraq • October 1991 - William Jefferson Clinton, the governor of Arkansas, announces his plan to run for president in the 1992 election. • May 1992 - The 27th Amendment to the Constitution is passed, to prevent the U.S. Congress from giving itself a pay raise midterm. • November 1992 – Democratic presidential candidate Bill Clinton defeats incumbent President George H.W. Bush. • June 1993 – In response to the Iraqi Secret Service’s attempt to assassinate former president George H.W. Bush , President Clinton ordered a missile strike on the Iraqi Intelligence headquarters in Baghdad.
