  1. Fabian Batista MS, Marine & Atmospheric Sciences BS, Chemistry • Cohort V, Phase III Washington, DC March 14-20

  2. Activities Since Phase I Mar ‘08: Accepted offer to PhD program at UCSC May ‘08: Phase II Activity Aug ‘08: Moved West, NY to CA Nov ‘08: Completed experimental work for MS on election day, thesis in progress Jan ‘09: Matriculated into PhD program

  3. Phase II: SSEP Meeting • Attended the Science Steering & Evaluation Panel Meeting for the International Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) in Busan, South Korea • Observed scientific coordination and camaraderie at the international level • Networked and developed working relationships with several SSEP board members

  4. Goin’ Back to Cali! • Drove cross country from NY back to CA in late August • Temporary return to NY to complete experimental work for MS thesis, then flew home to CA on an historic election day.

  5. Since January 2009 • Matriculated into PhD program at • Developing paleo-proxy for N utilization based on d15N of amino acids from deep sea bamboo corals and marine sediments • Working on instrumentation to measure d13C of amino acids via LC/irm-MS. Theoretically, less laborious than GC/irm-MS. • Establishing method to measure D/L ratios of amino acids with intent to use D/L ratios as a cheaper means than 14C to date samples.
