Mount Athos is a World Heritage Site is standing with pride, officially named as ‘Monastic State of Holy Mountain’. It is home to around 20 or 30 Orthodox Monasteries. The Mount is also referred to as the Holy Mountain. The Mount has been inhabited since ancient times by Christian with long monastic traditions dating from 800AD. The great Mount Athos is 2033meters which was mentioned as Aiskhylos and Homer as the first Home of Greek God Apollo and God Zeus. They lived at this very place, before they moved to Mt Olympus.

In 49th AD, Mary sailed to the Island Cyprus to visit her friend, Lazurus. On her journey a huge storm disturbed Mary’s ship, the ship was then landed on a protected bay on the eastern coast of Athos. . The coast was surrounded by beautiful forest and towering mountain. Mary then declared, ‘this mountain is holy ground, and now is my portion’. The spot Anchorage her boat is the present day of the Monastery of Iveron.

The Holy Mount spread over 50km in length and 8-12Km wide covering over 350-km.
