  2. Who invented the first shoes • The first tennis shoes came from Britain

  3. When was the first shoe invented??? • Tennis shoes first began to show up in the late 1800s.

  4. Who wore the shoes when they were invented?? • These shoes were worn only by sailors and wealthy aristocrats who wanted them for sports.

  5. What were they made of? • The first tennis shoes were made of canvas. This was so that busy worker or athletes could wash them regularly .

  6. First U.S. tennis shoes made • The Converse All-Star was the first U.S. tennis shoe.

  7. When was it made? • The first converse all-star shoes were released in 1917.

  8. Tennis shoe innovations • As the desire for tennis shoes increased, manufacturers found ways to make them so they could improve an athlete's performance. • Such as making them light weight or giving them more traction into the ground.

  12. 1908 • 1908 Marquis M. Converse establishes the Converse Shoe Company to make athletic shoes, thus revolutionizing the game of basketball and becoming an American icon

  13. 1917 • 1917 Keds are the first mass-marketed athletic shoes in America; they become popular with boaters, cheerleaders and small children

  14. 1920 • 1920 German shoemaker AdiDassler begins producing handmade training shoes in his mother's washroom

  15. 1931 • 1931 Dassler’s new company, Adidas, produces its first athletic shoe

  16. 1935 • 1935 Converse’s new style of “tennis shoes” (made for tennis champion Jack Purcell) become a staple of early Hollywood and the “bad boy” crowd

  17. 1950’s • 1950s Sneakers become a symbol of rebellion for teenagers around the world; the fashion is “officially” sanctioned when teen idol James Dean is photographed wearing denim jeans and white sneakers
