Fitness, Health and Exercise • Fitness means the ability to meet the demands of the environment. Where physical activity is concerned it means the ability to perform throughout the event without tiring or losing skill. • Health is the state where physical, mental and social wellbeing of an individual are in total unison. • Exercise means a form of physical activity done primarily to improve one’s health and physical fitness. Performing specific exercise will improve specific aspects of fitness. Exercise makes it easier to cope with the demands of the environment. It makes you fitter. As a result you will be able to work harder, feel less tired and can enjoy life to the maximum.
Fitness • Fitness is a combination of different components. • All sports need different types of fitness elements. • The components of fitness are either health related or skill related. • The effectiveness of skill related fitness is directly affected by health related fitness. • If you do not have good health related fitness then you will not be able to perform skill related fitness as well.
Health Related Components of Fitness • Cardiovascular Endurance – the ability of the circulatory system to deliver oxygen muscles need when working physically. • Muscular endurance – the ability of muscles to repeat contractions without tiring. • Strength – the force muscles exert when they contract. • Flexibility – the range of movement at a joint • Speed – the ability to move your body or part of your body quickly • Body Composition – the ratio of bone, muscle and fat that makes up the body

Health Related Components of Fitness Choose ONE sport that you participate in and work out where or why you need certain components of fitness
Skill Related Components of Fitness • Power – explosive strength, a combination of strength and speed • Agility – the ability to change the body’s position and direction quickly. • Balance – the ability to hold a position without wobbling or falling over. • Co-ordination – the ability to move body parts smoothly and accurately in response to what your senses tell you. • Reaction Time – the time it takes to respond to a stimulus.

Being fit to play • It’s important that we are fit when taking part in sports – especially if we are playing for a team. • Not being fit enough can affect the game. • By using your list of what the components of fitness are and what they mean fill in the table with what you would see happening in a football match. Give examples of what would or would not happen.
What affects fitness? • There are several things that can have a direct affect on how fit you are or how fit you are attempting to be. • List factors that will affect fitness explaining why they have an effect
HEALTH RELATED EXERCISE PROGRAMME • Exercising the components of fitness relating to health will help improve day to day wellbeing and help contribute to a longer lifespan.
HOMEWORK • Plan a health related exercise programme for 1 month. • You must incorporate all aspects of health related fitness • You need to think about balancing hard days with easy days and having at least 1 rest day • It doesn’t have to be complicated it can be set out in a simple table. • You may add anything to it e.g. diet, relaxation etc for extra marks.
