  5. The Significance of Patience • The word “patience” in our text is taken from the Greek word (HUPOMONE) and it means “to abide under.” • That is to say, “patience is the quality that does not surrender to circumstances or succumb under trial.” (Vine’s Expository Dictionary) • It is that attitude which says, “I WILL NEVER QUIT!” This attitude is significant to possess for without it there is the danger that we might “throw in the towel” and abandon our walk with God when hard times come.

  6. The Sanctification of Patience • Truly, the Bible tells us that developing patience helps us to become sanctified (set apart from the world for service for God) and strengthened. HERE IS HOW THE PROCESS WORKS: • When we care enough to embrace patience as a fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22) and put it on (Colossians 3:12), we will then have a worthy walk (Ephesians 4:1,2) and become a complete Christian (James 1:4).

  7. The Situations Calling for Patience • In our text, James called for his audience to develop patience in the face of persecution at the hands of ungodly rich people. • There are a number of circumstances that call for patience on our part today. Here are just a few: • A spouse who does not share your faith • A spouse who has stop caring • A child that has developed a greater love for the world than for God • A friend who has betrayed a trust • A friend who has stopped being a friend • A co-worker who attacks and antagonizes • Brothers or sisters in Christ who choose not to meet needs • Illnesses, inconveniences, and inconsistencies (even our own)

  8. The Securing of Patience • By waiting on the Lord (5:7; Isaiah 40:28-31) • By establishing our hearts (5:8; II Thess. 2:16,17) • By not grumbling against one another (5:9; Philippians 2:14)

  9. The Securing of Patience • By imitating the example of the prophets who suffered before us (5:10; Matthew 5:11,12) • By remembering the perseverance of Job (5:11; Job 1:21,22; 2:10) • By remembering the Lord is both merciful and compassionate (5:11; II Corinthians 1:3)

  10. The Success of Patience • II Timothy (2:11,12) • Hebrews (6:11,12) • Hebrews (10:32-39)
