What does the term 'disability' mean? • There is no single definition accepted by everyone. • If you attempt to define ‘disability’ you also have to define what is normal. • This is harder than it seems. • The idea of ‘disability’ is linked to culture and society. • Different cultures and societies have different ideas of what ‘disability’ is.

  3. What does the term 'disability' mean? • Governments and services use legal definitions of ‘disability’ to determine who is entitled to funding and services. Legal definitions: • emphasise the limitations placed on people because of barriers e.g. discrimination, access • recognise the rights of people with disabilities.

  4. What does the term 'disability' mean? • Everyone is an individual with many characteristics. • Some of those characteristics may arise from a disability.
