  1. Lighthouse Projects Status - January 2007 WP2 :: Objectives, Information & Dissemination System Anders Mathiesen (GEUS) together with Philippe Calcagno(BGRM) & Marcel Rosca(UOR) Lighthouse Projects – Status – Jan 2007

  2. Background One of the goals within the ENGINE project is, as part of the WP2, to locate and classify main Geothermal Lighthouse projects, related to ENGINE topics and significant on a European scale. At first, the objective is to classify existing and future Lighthouse Projects within Europe located between to the Portugal to the West and Russia to the East (but including Bouillante). At first, only projects using geothermal for power/energy production will be included; excluding projects using only heat pumps. Lighthouse Projects – Status – Jan 2007

  3. The Idea Based on a list of possible Lighthouse Projects we have contacted what we think is possible contact persons; - either in charge or persons that could have knowledge of such a project on the list. To classify the various type of Projects we compiled a Questionnaire which was E-mailed to each of the contact persons GEUS is now in the phase of collecting and managing data and information on Geothermal Lighthouse Projects within the ENGINE area. Lighthouse Projects – Status – Jan 2007

  4. The Idea - Questionnaire The idea is to present an overall broad presentation of each Project, based on a Questionnaire guided by a simplified structure and relevant keywords. Filling out the Questionnaire should result in a condense description of the Project suitable for the public and for displaying on the ENGINE Web-site. The first part of the Questionnaire is comparable facts/statements for each project. These will pop-up when the mouse pans over the site-location on the Web-site. The rest of the Questionnaire is divided into 4 categories each including a short additional text. These are intended to be pop-up Information boxes accessed from the above facts box and could e.g. be illustrated with figures.. Lighthouse Projects – Status – Jan 2007

  5. Questionnaire–First Part Comparable facts/statements for each project (e.g.): Project Name - Contact Person – Location Web-Site Link Type of Resource [High/Low Enthalpy / EPS etc.] Main on-site Operator [Drilling, Stimulation, Monitoring, Power Plant etc.] Number of wells [w. Total depth pr. well] Type of wells – Well Configuration – Distance between wells Temperature at total depth Combination w. other energy sources [Gas, Waste, Biomass, etc.] Potential of geothermal resources [TJ/yr at Date] Average flow rate [kg/s at Date] Main production [Heat or Power] Installed/Expected capacity [MWe or MWt at Date] Running/Expected capacity [MW/time at Date] Lighthouse Projects – Status – Jan 2007

  6. Questionnaire–The Rest – Info. Boxes • 4 categories each including a short additional text: • Short description of Exploration History(max. 200 words) • Objective of project - Important dates • Main geological context [stratigraphy, sedimentary fms, volcanism, …etc. ] • Expected CO2 emission saving • Project funding [state, communities, private etc.] • Distribution network • Reservoir Characteristics(max. 200 words) • Type of reservoir [fractured, porous or both] • Hosted lithology / rock / mineralogy / fluids • Fracture system - Stress field • Temperature range or temperature profile • Main reservoir characteristics [porosity, (natural) permeability etc.] • Occurrence of natural brines • Stimulation types [hydraulic, thermal, chemical] • Wells characteristics [injectivity, productivity etc.] • Connectivity between wells • Storage capacity Lighthouse Projects – Status – Jan 2007

  7. Questionnaire–The Rest – Info. Boxes • Exploitation(max 200 words) • Type of exploitation/power plant [direct, binary or combined cycle] • Type of binary cycle [ORC, Kalina cycle etc.] • Nature of working fluid • Cooling system [water, air] • Injection fluid [water, salty water etc.] • Annual production [GWhe or GWht at Date (if expected)] • Seasonal production • Capacity factor (%) • Need for special tools [pumps, turbine etc.] • Development/improvement of methods [chemical fracturing, seismic etc..] • Monitoring and optimising of field / area using computer models • Assessment of environmental impact • On-going or Future plans (max 200 words) • Next important event [major hydraulic test, new geophys. measure. etc.] • Future plans? e.g.:: • - New wells • - Optimizing of existing or building new power plants • - Implementation of new tools • - Implementation of new methods Lighthouse Projects – Status – Jan 2007

  8. Questionnaire–The Rest….. Pictures/Figures ENGINE partners involved in the Project Use list of partners from ENGINE Web-site Main References (no more than 5 references) Please provide a site picture, - and if possible, a few relevant figures would be appreciated However, - projects that have no production or drill sites, but are projects where tools, software or methodologies are the main objectives are also most welcome and does not have to strictly follow the Questionnaire.. Lighthouse Projects – Status – Jan 2007

  9. List of Main Projects Types • 1. EGS or related EGS projects • Soultz Project • Basel Project • Gross Schönebeck project • Genesys project • Promotheus project • Landau • Urach • Klaipeda • 2. Hydrothermal projects • Bouillante • Larderello • Hengill • Kamchatka • 3. Technological projects • Húsavik project • Neustadt-Glewe project • Altheim project • 4. Other Projects • Geothermal Asparagus Farm • ‘Poland’ • ‘Hungary’ • …. Lighthouse Projects – Status – Jan 2007

  10. Lighthouse projects – Status Jan 2007 • 11 out of 17 Questionnaires have been returned • Reminders has been send out to the rest • The preliminary result shown that: • A list of Contact Persons has now been established • Examples of all 4 Main Project Types are available • A good basis for compiling a Web-site suitable for the public displaying seems possible Lighthouse Projects – Status – Jan 2007

  11. Maps with Data information Temperature Distribution Map at geothermal reservoir Lighthouse Projects – Status – Jan 2007

  12. Gross Schönebeck test site and the most recent geological model (2006) with well paths Test Site and Geological models Lighthouse Projects – Status – Jan 2007

  13. Location map with important sites around the Bouillante Field; Guadeloupe Krafla Central Volcano with 60 MW power plant; Iceland Location – Maps and Sites Lighthouse Projects – Status – Jan 2007

  14. Klaipeda Geothermal Demonstration Plant; Lithuania Hannover test site(red area) next to the GEOZENTRUM Hannover Location - Sites Lighthouse Projects – Status – Jan 2007

  15. Examples of Geothermal Co-operation Lighthouse Projects – Status – Jan 2007

  16. How to proceed .. Decide how to setup and implement the Web-site Decide what type and the amount of data and information to put on the Web-site How we persuade the remaining to contribute with information, - and maybe even get new projects to join.. When the Web-site is working the next stage could be to ask Countries as e.g. Slovakia, Azores Bulgaria, Slovenia, Czech Republic and maybe UK and Ireland… .. and Countries which, - at the moment are not EU members -, e.g. former Yugoslavia, Turkey... Lighthouse Projects – Status – Jan 2007
