  41. Moving on

  42. Poetry We began our poetry unit by studying TONE, MOOD. Then we studied IMAGERY because poetry has so much imagery. Then we studied metaphor and simile because poetry has tons of those as well.

  43. Poetry • We began with song lyrics because they are pretty much poems as well • Then we learned personification, alliteration, hyperbole, and onomatopoeia using Shel Silverstein for practice • Today, we will begin reading ACADEMIC-LITERARY-CANON Poetry

  44. Poetry • This is in your BLUE hand out you may take notes if you wish on your blue hand out or in your note book • Poetry is usually broken up in STANZAS

  45. Stanzas • Stanzas are basically a group of lines in a poem In the sun, the rain is misty and bright. Warm and often relaxing. In the dark, the rain is hazy and black. Cold and often threatening. This very short poem as only TWO stanzas.

  46. Theme • Theme is the CENTRAL IDEA TO A LITERARY WORK • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p4qME64SkxM

  47. Theme • Today, we will read several poems and we will discuss them together as class

  49. Mother to Son by Langston Hughes • What kinds of hardships did your parents have to endure? • What do they do? How hard to they work? • Do you think it is worth it?

  50. Well, son, I'll tell you:
Life for me ain't been no crystal stair.
It's had tacks in it,
And splinters,
And boards torn up,
And places with no carpet on the floor—
Bare.
But all the time
I'se been a-climbin' on,
And reachin' landin's,
And turnin' corners,
And sometimes goin' in the dark
Where there ain't been no light.
So, boy, don't you turn back.
Don't you set down on the steps.
'Cause you finds it's kinder hard.
Don't you fall now—
For I'se still goin', honey,
I'se still climbin',
And life for me ain't been no crystal stair.
