  1. Triangles

  2. Learning Goal • LG: Identify the characteristics of a given set of triangles according to their sides and/or their interior angles • Kid Friendly: Be able to name different types of triangles • What do I think I know:

  3. 3 Things you already know about Triangles • A triangle has 3 sides • All angles in a triangle add up to 180 degrees • Two triangles make a quadrilateral • Tri means three • Three vertices • Three angles

  4. Try your own • Draw a triangle of your choice. Measure and label each angle in the triangle. Were any of the angles the same? Were any of the sides the same length? Or were they all different? • Now draw a totally different triangle. Were any of the angles the same? Were any of the sides the same length? Or were they all different? • Now draw a totally different triangle from the other two you’ve drawn. Were any of the sides the same length? Were any of the angles the same? Or were they all different?

  5. Two ways to Classify Triangles • By their sides • Are any of the sides the same length? If so, how many? • You can tell if a side of a triangle is the same as another if it has markings on the side • For example: • By their angles • Are any of the angles the same amount? If so, how many? • For example:

  6. Naming a Triangle based on its Sides There are three special names given to triangles that tell how many sides (or angles) are equal. There can be 3, 2 or no equal sides/angles: Equilateral Triangle Three equal sides
Three equal angles, always 60° Isosceles Triangle Two equal sides
Two equal angles Scalene Triangle No equal sides
No equal angles

  7. Naming a triangle based on its angles Triangles have names that tell you what type of angle is inside: Acute Triangle All angles are less than 90° Right Triangle Has a right angle (90°) Obtuse Triangle Has an angle more than 90°

  8. But! Remember that triangles can be classified in BOTH ways. So a triangle may be an acute triangle, but it might also be a scalene triangle Or, it may be an isosceles triangle and a right triangle

  9. Your Task…. • Creatively demonstrate the following: • An equilateral triangles • An isosceles triangle • A scalene triangle • An acute triangle • A right triangle • An obtuse triangle • 2 triangles that you classify in TWO different ways • Your materials: • Your creative brain • Any app you choose on iPads (iMotion, Educreations, Video Fx Live, etc.) • The usual classroom items (paper, markers, etc.) • MUST include a plan PRIOR to making the final piece. This may be a script or a sketch of what you plan to make
