  1. D.R.Congo

  2. About D.R.Congo • Nation in crisis, reeling from years of brutal conflict and neglect, and struggling with widespread poverty, food insecurity, uneven economic development and regional instability. • Conflict devastated and destabilised the country and claimed the lives of an estimated five million civilians. People continue to live in crisis conditions in many parts of the country. • Eastern Congo: Conflict spread from Rwanda: 1994; very fertile soil, rich mineral deposits etc BUT violence has destroyed people’s lives and livelihoods • In other parts of the country with better security conditions, crumbled infrastructure has significantly decreased the country’s food production capacity. Households and major food importers maintain food reserves at a bare minimum because of the volatile political and economic environment, as well as the frequent threats of looting. • In 1990, 25% of Congolese were undernourished; today 69% go hungry – the highest proportion of any country

  4. Since 2003, ACF has been building the capacity of local health systems to tackle malnutrition. In 2010 alone ACF trained almost 4,000 public health workers and equipped 476 treatment centres, ensuring that 42,000 severely malnourished people—the vast majority of them children—received life-saving care - the most ever treated in a single country through ACF's nutrition programmes

  5. This year ACF is providing training, medical and nutritional supplies, and financial support to 45 stabilisation centres in hospitals across D.R.Congo. Since we began our capacity-building work in 2003, we have strengthened hundreds of local health systems to combat deadly malnutrition, leaving a legacy of community-based care throughout D.R. Congo.

  6. Water and Sanitation: Hombo riverPeople used to drink the water from the river; the same river where they bath, wash and defecate. ACF set up tanks to decontaminate water, provided taps…

  7. Seed Fairs: ACF provides vouchers to vulnerable farmers to purchase seeds from other growers. Many farmers lost their seeds when their villages were torched or when they had to leave their villages altogether. The new seeds allow them to restart the agricultural cycle: by planting beans, maize, rice and peanuts they are able to vary their diets.

  8. Fresh Market Vouchers in Dadaab Refugee Camp: Families rely on dry food rations, comprised mainly of cereals, oil and corn-soy meal. While these rations just about meet daily caloric requirements, they fall short of people’s nutritional needs. ACF launched ground-breaking pilot programme to provide nearly 18,000 children and their families with the means to consume nutritious fresh foods, ultimately improving their health and reducing their risk of mortality.
