Literacy rates are 21% lower for females than for males. • Many government schools exist on paper only as the proposed buildings are either partially or fully ruined.

They have to walk many kilometers to reach a primary school. • Many in the country side feel that the things they learned at school are not relevant to their lives. • Many government schools have no classroom furniture, toilets, clean drinking water or playground. • In several cases, the schools are confined to one room only. Hence the children are forced to study under trees or in the open even in the rainy season.

Only 60% of grade 5 pupils could do a grade 2 addition or sum. • Many teachers themselves are badly educated or unqualified. • 12 million children among a population of 1.1 billion people are employed in India, according to census figures, although activists say the real number is closer to 60 million.
