British Council • UK’s international organisation for educational opportunities and cultural relations • Funded by UK government departments (DfES, FCO, DFID, Devolved Administrations), European Commission, other GOs/NGOs and through exams and ELT provision • We work in education and training, science, arts, governance, English Language teaching and exams and recruitment of overseas students to UK education providers • In the UK, we act as an agency to deliver international education and training schemes: Socrates, eTwinning, Leonardo da Vinci, Youth, Global School Partnerships, DfES Global Gateway, International School Award

  3. eTwinning • ICT partnerships for schools across Europe • eTwinning launched in January 2005. It aims to • Encourage new ICT-based projects between schools • Provide recognition for existing ICT projects • Enable sharing of resources, good practice and experience with European partner schools • Encourage new pedagogical approaches through ICT

Features and Benefits • eTwinning is an easy, free and effective way of looking for, and working with, partner schools in the rest of Europe • There is no application form and no lengthy administration • The focus is on how ICT can help deliver the curriculum, rather than on ICT itself • Working with partners in other countries can boost pupils’ motivation, key skills and cultural and language awareness • Working with teachers, heads and ICT co-ordinators from other countries enables you to share and celebrate your own expertise, forge lasting links and give an exciting new aspect to the curriculum

  5. eTwinning tools • TwinFinder – Twin schools meeting your link criteria are sent to your desktop. These can be investigated, organised and saved to a favourites list • TwinSpace – online collaborative space to enable you to work with your partner, including mailbox, bulletin board, sharing files, publishing eTwinning resources, chat and shared calendar(under development) • Progress Card – keep track of your eTwinning project with this online system (under development) • Thematic Fora – exchange project ideas with teachers across Europe on specific themes, e.g. environmental projects, Europe in the classroom, etc.

How it works • Register your school on www.etwinning.net (called the Central Support Service) • Search for partner: if you find one you wish to work with, register your eTwinning partnership • You can choose single or multiple partnerships • Potential to put your project forward for eTwinning Quality Label which provides recognition for successful projects • Share your experience with other schools through dissemination in the UK and throughout Europe

Which countries are eligible? • 25 EU Member States: • Austria Belgium (French-speaking and Flemish-speaking) Cyprus Czech Republic DenmarkEstonia Finland France Germany Greece HungaryIreland Italy LatviaLithuania Luxembourg MaltaNetherlands Poland PortugalSlovakia Slovenia SpainSweden United Kingdom • 3 European Economic Area countries: • Iceland Liechtenstein Norway (correct at Spring 2005)

Is there any funding available? • Not directly, but you might be eligible for the following schemes to develop further your eTwinning project: • Comenius 2 professional development training grants • School linking visits provide funding for curriculum linking visits (schools in England and Wales only) • eTwinning can lead to (or add a new dimension to) funded, three-year curriculum projects under Comenius 1 • Teachers’ International Professional Development programme (School-determined Visits – managed by Specialist Schools Trust)

Additional Features • Funded mobility opportunities are planned to reward schools who are involved in quality eTwinning projects • National eTwinning awards scheme to be launched during International Education Week 2005 • Europe-wide awards to be run on an annual basis • Study visits, project planning meetings and other training activities for schools involved in quality eTwinning partnerships • eTwinning Development Workshops for registered schools who are looking to develop projects
