  2. What is an allegory? • Hidden meaning within a story, poem or movie • A story, poem or movie that symbolizes something else • With an allegory, you can read the text as just a story, playful and entertaining, but you can also read it on a political level or a psychological level.

  3. Examples of Allegory • Animal Farm-an allegory about the Russian Revolution, with various characters representing several figures or groups of people at that time. • Avatar • Dante’s Divine Comedy • Lord of the Flies • Chronicles of Narnia, the character Aslan is an allegory for Jesus Christ.

Hidden Meaning in InfernoCanto 1 • Black and white spotted Leopard=Two political parties in Florence, Italy. • Black Guelphs-liked the Pope (sentenced Dante to exile) • White Guelphs-disliked the Pope • Lion=King of France • Friend of the Pope, French troops occupied Florence when Dante wrote this 3. She wolf=Rome • Pushes Dante away from the light. This symbolizes pushing him away from being a great poet because nobody was a better poet than Virgil and he was from Rome.
