Students may also have additional assignments if they did not complete their class work or need to make up work due to absences.Unless indicated otherwise, assignments are due the next day. * Homework: Students are expected to read for at least 30 minutes every night. Most nights students will have additional assignments that may include spelling activities, writing and/or math (Home Links).  * Take Home Folder: Students will use a folder to carry homework and school papers to and from school. Folders should be checked nightly. * Homework Routine: Set a tone of responsibility by establishing a place and time to complete homework.

Home-School Connection 3rd Grade Website: • When you visit our website you will have access to teacher contact information, see an overview of the curriculum and Home Projects and view the monthly newsletter. Monthly Newsletter: • The students will bring home a newsletter the last Friday of every month. This letter informs parents about the curricular lessons and activities the students have been completing, and an insight on what is upcoming. It will also provide important dates and events taking place in the 3rd grade or at Lincoln School.

  4. Report Cards / Conferences Fall Semester: Conferences will be held Wednesday, October 23 and Thursday, October 24. Report cards will be issued December 5. Winter Semester: Conferences will be held Wednesday, February 12 and Thursday, February 13. Report cards will be issued March 20. Spring Semester: There are no conferences for the Spring Semester. Report cards will be sent home on the last day of school, June 5.

  5. Reading: Strategies: 1. Pauses while reading to reflect on the text 2. Monitors for understanding (re-reads and asks questions) 3. Gathers information from picture and text Skills: 1. Identifies genre 2. Makes predictions about characters, events, information and vocabulary using the title, pictures and text 3. Uses context clues to help define new vocabulary 4. Uses context clues to locate and retrieve information from a text 5. Identifies main idea with supporting details 6. Understands plot - characters, setting, problem and solution 7. Tells correct sequence of story events 8. Is able to summarize a story 9. Identifies and uses graphic devices 10. Can discuss author’s purpose and point of view 11. Can compare and contrast elements of a text 12. Understands cause and effect 13. Identifies the theme of a story Can draw conclusions, make inferences or judgments Extended Response Questions: 1. Understands and applies the 6 steps to writing good responses 2. Uses reading strategies to retrieve information from the text 3. Incorporates personal experiences or connections

Writing Writer’s Workshop Model Throughout the year the students will study and explore various writing units including: Author’s Study, Book Review, Informational Research, Personal Narrative, Feature Article, Biography and Poetry. Also incorporated within the curriculum will be reading and math Extended Responses. While learning each style of writing students will: Learn to write through the use of mentor texts and use Ralph Fletcher strategies as a guideline Study various writers, chart specific elements based on that writing style and use these elements in their writing Use a writer’s status board to monitor their progress with respect to writing, revising, editing, conferencing, and publishing.

  7. Math: Sequences and Patterns: 1. Identifies, describes and extends a pattern 2. Discovers and follows rules for number and attribute patterns Addition and Subtraction: 1. Knows basic addition and subtraction facts 2. Adds multi-digit numbers without regrouping 3. Subtracts multi-digit numbers without regrouping 4. Adds multi-digit numbers with regrouping 5. Subtracts multi-digit numbers with regrouping 6. Completes fact and number families Place Value in Whole Numbers: 1. Names and labels place value to the millions in the proper sequence 2. Reads seven digit numbers in numerals and words 3. Writes seven digit numbers in numerals and words 4. Identifies a digit’s place and value in numbers to the millions 5. Compares and orders whole numbers. Place Value in Decimals: 1. Names and labels decimals to the thousandths 2. Reads 1, 2 and 3 digit decimals 3. Writes 1, 2 and 3 digit decimals 4. Compares and orders decimals

  8. Math Problem Solving: 1. Understands and applies the 5 steps to solving number stories 2. Recognizes mathematical vocabulary 3. Solves basic fact and multi-digit number stories Measurement: 1. Tells time before and after the hour (to the nearest minute) 2. Uses rulers to measure line segments to the nearest centimeter 3. Uses rulers to measure line segments to the nearest ½ inch 4. Finds the perimeter of a polygon 5. Finds the area of a polygon (in square units) Open Ended Questions: 1. Uses problem solving skills 2. Communicates mathematical processes in writing

  9. Social Studies / Science The social studies program focuses on the world around us. From cities to states, states to countries and countries to continents, the students are learning not only where they are located but also the similarities and differences in the environment, culture and way of life of people from the past to present. The social studies curriculum has been divided into five main units: Unit 1: Mapping Our World Unit 2: Illinois Unit 3: Native American Unit 4: Colonial Times Unit 5: Westward Expansion The science program provides students with the opportunity to participate in hands-on activities by conducting experiments following the “Scientific Method”. The lessons encourage inquiry, discovery, exploration and investigation. The science curriculum has been divided into three main units: Unit 1: Water Unit 2: Structures of Life Unit 3: Physics of Sound

  10. PBIS The Dolphin Dos: Be Safe Be Ready Be Respectful Lincoln school wants to highlight positive behaviors. To help motivate students, the school community is participating in the Gotcha Reward System. Positive Behaviors are reinforced through: • Whole School Assemblies • Grade level “Cool Tool” Rotations • Daily Classroom Reminders Students can earn Gotchas to be used for: • School Store Prizes • Individual Classroom Rewards • Monthly School Celebrations • Classrooms Celebrations
