  1. WORKFLOW FOR ELECTRONIC UTILITY PLAN MARK-UP AND DATA EXCHANGE Presented to: UAO Power Users by: Michael Melendez, P.E. March 15, 2005

  2. GOAL: To improve the accuracy and efficiency of preliminary utility location by employing common CADD software and utility-specific tools to create electronic plan mark-ups.

  3. Traditional Process: • Conduct topographic survey • Designer produces plan sheets with topo survey and 30% design • Mailed to UAO with request for mark-up • UAO marks up plan sheet with colored pencil using UOA drafting standard • UAO returns hardcopy plans to designer • Designer transfers hardcopy information into CADD file • Designer produces hardcopy and sends to UAO for verification

  6. Feedback: • UAO Input • Unification of ASCE Quality Standards • Functionality • Labeling Tools

  7. Electronic Process: • Notify UAO’s of upcoming project • Conduct topographic survey • Designer transmits survey & blank mark-up file to UAO • AutoCAD (DWG) or MicroStation (DGN) Format • UAO’s conduct mark-up with CADD and FDOT Utility Tools • UAO returns mark-up file to designer (topo survey excluded) • Designer compiles UAO mark-ups to produce plan sheets • Designer transmits PDF to UAO via email for verification

  8. Resources: • FDOT CADD Manual • FDOT CADD Criteria Handbook • Workshop Handout

  10. Benefits: • Time Savings (reduction in request/response) • Encourages Standardization of Plan Mark-up • Allows Historical Archiving for Wide-Scale Use • Improved Accuracy and Clarity of Plan Submittal • Eliminates Need for Hardcopy Retention • Format Promotes Internal/External Use

  11. Data Import Alternatives: • XYZ text files • GPS Coordinates • SUE Survey Data • Ground Penetrating Radar

  12. Information Integration: Query

  13. CADD Platform Options: FDOT Utility Tools function with: • AutoCAD • Bentley MicroStation • Bentley PowerDraft (MicroStation Lite) • $1205 + $295/yr (upgrades and support) • $1295 (one time cost w/out upgrades)
