  2. Entry Task • Is there a difference between speed and velocity? If so, explain the difference. • Name two circumstances in which negative acceleration is occurring. • Name two circumstances in which positive acceleration is occurring.

  3. Entry Task Class Answers • Speed-how fast something is going. • Speed and velocity- m/s, mi/sec, • Velocity-m/s how fast +direction. • Speed- 30 mph (change in distance)/(change in time). • Velocity-30 mph west. • Velocity-30 mph east. • Acceleration-m/s2 change in speed/time

  4. Positive and Negative acceleration • Positive acceleration is speeding up. • Negative acceleration is slowing down. • Car is moving forward and slowing down. (negative acceleration) • Car is moving forward and slow down and stop. (negative acceleration) • Car is going backwards and speeding up. (negative acceleration) • Car is moving backwards and slowing down- positive acceleration. • Car is moving backwards and stopping-positive acceleration. • Car is moving forward and speed up-positive acceleration.

Class Exercise • NEW EQUATION for NEW BRAKING DISTANCES New Braking Distance=NB Old Braking Distance=OB New Velocity=NV Old Velocity=OV • Example: The Owner’s manual for your porche 911 tells you that you can brake in 5 feet when going 30 mph. You want to know how far you can brake when going 90 mph on the Autobahn freeway in Germany. Calculate your new braking distance.

  6. Class Exercise 2 • Let’s say you used to be able to brake in 25 feet while going 50 mph, but now you can only brake in 30 feet while going 50 mph. • What is your new braking distance while going 30 mph?
