What’s a Fact? • A fact is information that can be verifiedand proven through experience or observation. Facts are not open for debate. Example • The Boston Celtics have won the most championships in the NBA, 17.
What’s an Opinion? • An opinion is information based on personal beliefs, attitudes, or judgments. Opinions can be challenged in debate. Example • The Boston Celtics are the best basketball team.
Can something be both? • An argument is an opinion that is qualified, at least partially supported by fact. Arguments are perfect for debates. Example • The Boston Celtics are the best basketball team because they have won the most championships in the NBA, 17.
How do Arguments work? • Arguments are like the center part of a Venn Diagram, they are the “gray area,” in between facts and opinions. • Opinion +Fact =Argument • All you have to do is provide a factual piece of evidence for your opinion and you’ll be arguing effectively.
