  1. Geospatial Data &Map Digitalization Creating a digitized map of the Mono Basin National Scenic Area

  2. Create Geodatabase First step, Create New Geodatabase: Here I used ArcCatalogto create the data sets to store the digitized information. This is where my feature classes that will be added to my map are made.

  3. I make a connection to the folder where I saved my base map tif. File. Once in my catalog tree, I select it to create new feature classes to later be used in ArcMaps. Feature classes such as; Forest Land, Islands, Lakes, Roads, and Services

  4. Digitizing Next I open up ArcMaps to begin to digitize. This is where I make a folder connection to ArcCatalog to add the Feature Classes I created into ArcMaps. I make the connection and add my base map tiff. As well as my empty data sets. Those now show in my Table of Contents

  5. Next the UTM Coordinates and Control points are added. This is Georeferencing. Georeferencing raster data allows it to be viewed, queried, and analyzed with other geographic data.

  6. Digitalization Begin to digitize by opening up your Editor tool bar, then select your feature in the Create Feature section, select your tool, (point, Line, or Polygon), and begin to trace your features. You also save your edits with the Editor Tool Bar.

  7. Features &AttributeTable Begin to place your features on your map. Then the tables are created to hold the information for the features on the digital map. Information such as: Town population, Land mass area, Road closure times for specific roads etc.

  8. Labels Next we need to label our select features, features such as Islands, Highways and Towns. For this we go into Layer Properties and hit the Label tab. Once this is done, our Islands, towns and highways will be labeled on our map.

  9. Now our selected feature are labeled

  10. Cartography Once all of the features are in place, the attribute tables are created and filled out, icons and color scheme is chosen, we then begin to insert the other visual attributes of a map, such as the Scale Bar, Neat Line, North Directional arrows as well as Designer name.

  11. In order to insert these things, we need to be in Layout View. From there we hit insert and we get the options for the Title, Neat Line, Legend, Scale Bar and Directional Arrows These are then arranged in a manner where they are understandable and not cluttered.

  12. Take a step back, study your map, make sure it conveys what you intend it to, that it makes sense, its pleasing to the eye and all of your information is correct. Once this is done, your map is complete.

  13. Complete Map
