Presentation Overview • National Water Resource Infrastructure • Irrigation Schemes 2.1 Southern Cluster (EC,WC) 2.2 Limpopo (Tzaneen) 2.3 Northwest (Hartbeespoort) 2.4 Other Irrigation Schemes 3. Conclusion 2
1. National Water Resources Infrastructure • The NWRI Branch in DWA develops new water resources infrastructure and operates and maintains existing assets for the storage and supply of raw water. • Existing infrastructure is grouped into four clusters 3
2. Irrigation Schemes • Most irrigation schemes are operated and maintained by Water User Associations (WUAs)/Irrigation Boards • DWA provides capital for major refurbishment or rehabilitation as the schemes are still owned by the Department • DWA operated schemes are for multi–users: domestic/industrial and irrigation • Irrigation water released from dams into rivers 5
2.4 Other Irrigation schemes • Skoonspruit and Mooirivier irrigation schemes - Potch • Koppies Irrigation scheme – dysfunctional • Schemes operated by WUAs: Vaalharts, Orange Riet, Sand Vet, LORWUA, Sundays River Valley, etc 9
3. Conclusion • Most irrigation schemes have reached end of their useful lives • Major rehabilitation work required • Water tariffs not adequate to fund capital rehabilitation of schemes • Water losses from canals 10
