Grades/Grading scale Must pass Reading, Math, and 2 other subjects. 4 quality points counts as passing.

Rules: 1.Be respectful. 2.Be responsible. 3.Be safe. These are broad rules that cover many different areas of behavior and work habits. We will discuss them thoroughly with the students. If a student chooses to break a rule: 1st time: Warning 2nd time: One X = B in conduct 3rd time: Two X’s = C in conduct 4th time: Three X’s = D in conduct (lose recess) 5th time: Four X’s = F in conduct (lose recess the entire next week) Fighting, play fighting, and intentional disrespect toward a teacher or peer will result in an automatic detention and/or suspension. Students who behave appropriately will be periodically rewarded with starbucks.

Parents must initial or sign the conduct each Friday. Not signing will result in a loss of recess until it is signed. This is the student's responsibility. The conduct sheet is stapled in the front of the planner. It is the students’ responsibility to make sure this is not lost.

PBIS End of Month Reward Requirements: • A or B in Conduct • No office referrals • Fewer than 3 tardies and/or checkouts (unexcused)

Attendance • No tardiness or early checkouts • We teach bell to bell • On Fridays, get here by 8:15

ABSENT?? Go to each teacher at recess or in the morning during club time to pick up your assignments. Look on the websites. All lessons and homework are listed there.

Homework • Students will write it in the planners daily. Trust the planner. • There should notbe much homework. If your child is not using their time wisely in class, there will be a large amount. This is your signal to find out why they are not working in class.

Communication • Look for reminders on remind.com • Please make sure you take a handout if you have not signed up for it. • We check emails every morning. There is usually not a chance after that, but we will get back to you quickly.

ELA One Grade on Report Card Junior Great Books Novels (Frindle, Pedro’s Journal, Chinese Cinderella, Hatchet, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe Wordly Wise Grammar (Language Book) Spelling (phonics review) Puncutation and Spelling Mistakes are 1/2 point off in all subjects (even math). The points will be taken when 4 mistakes are made. (3 are free!) Writing: 5 paragraph essays with citing of references (Informative, Argumentative, Narrative) Centers: 3 points each.

AR • Choose books on your child's ZPD level • Point levels set individually with each student • 2 grades each nine weeks (comprehension and point goal) Ex.: 13/13.6 = 9.5/10 (points) 85% = 8.5/10 (comprehension)

School or Home • 40 assignments due the last nine weeks

MATH NOTES Ms. Switzer lswitzer@ebrschools.org www.msswitzer.weebly.com Skills Review: -Homework Monday-Thursday -Quiz the following Monday Fluency Quizzes: -Every other Thursday -100 problems with factors 1-12 -4 minutes for the first 9 weeks -Time will decrease to 3 minutes the second 9 weeks Study Island: -Hot Topics -Two content areas will be assigned for each 9 weeks. Students will have the 9 weeks to get the highest score they can. The highest score will be taken for a grade Zearn • www.zearn.org • This is a great resource. Encourage your child to get on it as often as possible. Grading: -If I can’t read it, I can’t grade it. If I can’t decide which number students are trying to write, it will be marked wrong. -Heading -All students are expected to include their first and last name, date, and number on every assignment. One point will be taken off the final grade for each part missing. -Study Guides -Sign your student’s study guides for an extra 3 points to a low math grade -All grades will be out of 100 points with exception of participation grades

Science • Experiments and Engineering Design Process • Science Fair: everyone must participate. Information will come home at the beginning of the second nine weeks.

Social Studies • Ancient Americas through French and Indian War • Projects: all research must be completed in class. Some project work will be completed at home.

Data Binders • These are signed papers • Students will graph their percentage on all graded assignments • Please, do not take the papers out of the binders. • This will come home every 2 weeks like the signed paper packet. • Please sign the sheet at the front and return. • If you place a note in the comment section, your child should tell us.

At Home • 10 - 12 hours of sleep a night for a healthy child • Clean out back packs and basically help your child learn organization techniques • Teach your child responsibility. It is their job to show you their planner and notes. It is not your job to hunt for it. Create a routine that your child can follow with consequences if they do not. • 30 minutes (at least) of strenuous, sweat-popping exercise daily! • Fifth grade is a transition to middle school and more independence. Help us to help you make it a smooth one! Structure! Structure! Structure!

Some tips for a successful year include: AR - Make sure she is reading and taking AR test. Wordly Wise- Part E is a grade. Complete it accurately every two weeks. Projects - There are many projects in 5th grade, especially Science/SS. Turn in projects ON TIME and adhere to the rubrics to be successful. Centers - keep up with center/rotation materials in both science/ss and reading. These assignments can hurt a student if they are not working accurately and keeping up with their materials. Students can come in at 8:00 and during recess if they are behind. Daily Skill Review – There is a daily skill review quiz each week in math, just like last year. Study this each night and do homework to help your math grade tremendously! Remember there is a difference in reading to finish and reading to learn. Focus!
