QUESTION • Are permanent markers really permanent?
purpose The purpose of my investigation is to determine if permanent markers really permanent? This is important to know because, if you are buying a permanent marker you would want to know if they the marker is really worth the money!
Hypothesize I Hypothesize that the sharpie won’t be as permanent as you think it would be. I believe this because the sharpie can come off the walls with special cleaners.
materials Detergent Scissors 15 5 CM X 5 CM FABBRIC SQARS 1 Sharpie MARKER (A) 2 Caliber MARKER (B) 3 Office Depot MARKER (C)
Variables Manipulated variables: brand of markers Responding variable: percentage of ink left on fabric Constant variable: size of fabric, how much ink is used on each square , method of washing and drying , amount of detergent is the same, method of rating
directions • Gather materials. • Cut 15 5cmx5cm fabric squares. • Draw a letter A on one fabric square using brand A marker. • Draw a letter B on one fabric square using brand B marker. • Draw a letter C on one fabric square using brand C marker. • Place fabric squares A,B, and C in the washing machine. Add detergent and wash. Place in dryer to dry. • Using the rating scale 1to 5, rate each square for the amount of ink still remaining with 1 being nothing remaining and 5 being all ink remaining. Record score for each square. • Repeat steps 3-7 for four more trials. • Calculate the average score for each brand of marker.
conclusion My hypothesis was correct. Permanent markers are not fully permanent. The Sharpie left an average of 4.4 marker on the fabric on the rating scale of 1 to 5 with 1 being no marker remaining and 5 being all ink remaining. Caliber brand marker left an average of 2.8 marker remaining. Office Depot brand left an average of 2.8 marker remaining.
