Interesting Facts Many store water in a tank formed of many overlapping leaves. -Others use trichomes, hairlikeappendeges, to gather moisture (cloudforests) and to reflect sunlight in deserts A family of monocot flowering plants, 3,170 types of which can be found in the Americas, 1 found in Equatorial Guinea (Pitcairniafeliciana) -Half are epiphytes -Can be found at sea level and 4,200 meters above sea level Bromeliaceae History------------------------------------- The Inca, Aztec and Maya used bromeliads for food, production, fiber and ceremony, just as they are used today. Spanish brought pineapple back to Europe, where it became popular -Hybridization in Belgium pre WWI Notable Bromeliads: Pinapple Spanish Moss -Bromeliad inflorescence is more diverse than any other family Fruit is usually a berry or a capsule
