  2. Childhood Michaelle Jean was born September 6th 1957 in Porte-au-Prince, Haiti. Porte-au-Prince is where Michaelle spent her early years in a middle class neighborhood. Her parents where Roger and Luce. There her father was a principal and a teacher. Michaelle was home-schooled because her parents didn’t want her to go to school. At school she would have to swear allegiance to Francoise “Papa Doc” Duval.

  3. Family Life In the year 1967 her father was arrested and tortured. In 1967 her father also fled to Canada. A year later his wife and two daughters joined him and they settled in Thetford Mines. Her parents separated and she went with her mother and her sister to Montreal. They lived in an apartment basement while her mother worked at a clothing factory and had a night job at a psychiatric hospital.

  4. Education Michaelle fluently spoke five languages; French, Haiti Creole, English, Italian and Spanish. She received a bachelors’ degree in Italian and Spanish when she attended the University of Montreal. At the University of Montreal she also began a master class of comparative literature taught in Italian. The degree she got from that let her make trips to several universities in Perugia, Florence and Milan. Michaelle worked for eight years on a shelter for battered woman in Quebec and throughout Canada during her studies.

  5. Career Jeans’ work caught the eye of a National Film Board producer and he invited her to return to Haiti to do interviews and do research for a film on the 1987 Haitian elections. Michaelle became the first black person on French television news in Canada when Radio Canada hired her. She worked for several years as a host or reporter of the networks’ programs such as; “Actual”, “Montréal Ce Soil”, and “Virages”. She married filmmaker Jean-Daniel Landford. He made many documentaries like; “ Haiti dans nos reves and “ l’heure de Cuba”.

  6. Michaelles’ big moment Prime Minister Paul Martin announced Michaelle’s appointment as Governor General in August 2005. On September 27th 2005 Michaelle Jean became Governor General.
